This assignment requires you to conduct an interview with either an established immigrant who migrated to the United States prior to 2010 or with a second-generation adult. If you are interviewing an immigrant, I encourage you to interview someone you do not know well. You should not interview your siblings, but you may interview a parent if you haven’t already done so for another class. The assignment has several goals.
I want you to apply the theories and concepts we have learned in class to the life experiences of a real person.
I want you to gain experience conducting research, which entails gathering and analyzing sociological data.
- One of the final exam questions will ask you to apply course material to your interview data.
- Using the readings, lectures and discussions as a resource, you will construct an interview guide that asks questions under three main themes: migration, incorporation and racial/ethnic identity. Your interview will be semi-structured. This means that the questionnaire is a guide, but the interview will be carried out like a conversation where you will ask questions and prompt your participant for further information.
- You must ask questions that illuminate ALL of the three themes outlined below. Below are some guiding suggestions.
The Migration Experience:
The process of migration (who financed it, how was the journey made, etc.)
The ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors that led to migration
- If the person is second generation, what do they know about their parents’ migration experiences?
Integration
Economic: finding a job, employment.
Language: Did the person speak English prior to migration? If not, how did they learn? If they are second generation, do they speak multiple languages currently? What is the main language spoken at home?
- Education: What is their highest level of education and was it attained in the U.S. or in their country of origin? How much education did they want to achieve? What type of schools did they attend?
- Mobility: How long have they lived in the U.S. and have they attained educational or occupational mobility? Have their children surpassed their education, occupation, or income levels? What are the specific mechanisms that have facilitated their mobility and incorporation?
- Intergenerational dynamics: How do they define becoming American for themselves and their children? Do they experience any conflicts with their children?
- Racial/Ethnic identification:
Is the person a citizen? Did they naturalize?
How do they identify racially and ethnically? Do they feel American? Have they ever been made to feel like they are foreigners?
How do people identify them when they see them?
- Have racial/ethnic stereotypes affected them in any way?
- How does the current political context affect their identity?
