Instructions The author of our text states, “It is likely that you have been emotionally as well as intellectually impacted by this material, have had some personal attitudes and beliefs challenged, and have become at least a bit more culturally open and less ethnocentric.” The following are the directions for your Cultural Experience Paper: Each student is required to write (in APA style) a five-page, typed, 12 point font, double-spaced analysis paper. The cover sheet and reference page are included in the five pages. Specifically, each student will choose a relevant, ongoing topic in the news that relates to cultural competence- For example, the Me Too Movement, Immigration, Dreamers, etc. Students will select a topic that is unfamiliar to student and should include an environment that is uniquely different from what the student is accustomed to. Students will examine a topic that is unfamiliar to the student’s norms and values, one they view as not directly affecting their daily lives. After researching newspapers, journal articles, social media platforms, Ted Talks, etc., students will respond to debriefing questions listed in the conclusion section of your paper. If you happen to know someone who would be comfortable sharing relevant experiences, please feel free to include them in your paper. This analysis paper will be written in three parts. Part I: Introduction Description and overview of the cultural issue you chose along with a statement describing what will be presented in the paper. Part II: Analysis of Cultural Issue – Discuss your rationale for selecting your specific issue. – Describe any personal experiences you have that color the lens through which you view this issue. – Describe the environment of the cultural issue and discuss your impression of the environment. – Describe any stereotypes/biases you may have towards those experiencing this issue. – When you see certain people or hear certain things that are affected by this issue, what triggers do you experience before you respond to the environment/issue? – What are your thoughts about how you may have been viewed by others in that environment? Part III: Conclusion Briefly summarize what you have presented and write your personal reaction. You must address the following regarding your reaction: -What did you learn about yourself during the course of this experience? How were your attitudes influenced by what you learned? – What did you learn about others during the course of this experience? – In what ways, if any, have you experienced changes in your impression of this issue as a result of the material in our course? Where do you feel you had the most difficulty or failed to make progress? – In a practical way, discuss the relevance of your experience to the human services profession AND how you might apply what you have learned to the professional career? Grading Criteria for Analysis Paper: Paper should contain the following sections to achieve 100 points: -Introduction (15 points) -Analysis (50 points) – Conclusion (30 points) – Written in a well-organized and logical manner, bold the headings of each of the three sections (15 points) This analysis paper counts toward 30% of your grade; and will serve as your final exam.
