All students are required to submit one Cultural Activity Essay based on a visit to a museum of art. Do not make the mistake of visiting the wrong type of museum. A museum of art typically has a wide variety of exhibits from an array of cultures and periods and is different from a marine museum, or a memorial museum, or African Art Gallery. The assignment instructions are very specific so read carefully.
This course focuses on ancient cultures (3000 BCE – 500 CE) so therefore the museum that you choose to visit should have a variety of art from the non-western ancient cultures studied as follows:
Ancient Egypt, Africa, Greece, Rome, India, China, and JapanA minimum of 6 pieces of art are required for this essay. Do not select more than 2 pieces of art from any single culture. For example, if ancient China, Japan and Africa are of interests to you, do not select more than 2 pieces of art from each culture. Most museums provide the formal name of the art displayed and a detailed description and brief history on a placard or sign near the exhibit. Be sure to include the proper names and descriptions of the art selected for your essay.
Your essay must adhere to standard essay writing format consisting of:
Cover page,
Introductory paragraph,
Text narrative that includes descriptive and expository remarks and
Closing paragraph
Essay must reflect the student’s critical thinking skills
Essay must include the student’s interpretation and opinions regarding the art selected
The essay must answer these questions… Where did you go? When did you go? What piqued your interests and why?
The student must demonstrate an understanding of Humanities concepts learned by including relative examples throughout the text narrative garnered from your required readings.
All essays must include a cover page
12 point font
Double spacing
Minimum of 550 words
Proof of attendance (scanned copy of program with signature and date of official, ticket stub, or cell phone photo with explanation).
