English Question
English 124 Paper #1 200 Points The Sunflower Dialogue The purpose of this assignment is • to think deeply about complex problems involving justice and forgiveness, issues particularly relevant to our historical moment. • to write an unconventional academic paper that challenges you to think in new and creative ways. The skills necessary to this complete this assignment are • to clearly, accurately, and thoroughly articulate others’ arguments while withholding judgment. • to practice close listening and dialogue in order to come to an accurate and thorough understanding of others’ viewpoints. • to carefully analyze the respondents’ texts to determine their major and minor claims, their supporting grounds, and their underlying assumptions. • to exercise creative thinking as you consider the form and context that frames your respondents’ dialogue. WRITING TASK Write a paper that puts two of The Sunflower respondents into a dialogue that clearly and accurately reflects the complexity of their views on forgiveness. In order to represent their arguments, you will both paraphrase the respondents in your own words and quote directly from their texts. You may choose any respondent from The Symposium except the six we have already discussed in class. This dialogue should foreground your two respondents’ positions on forgiveness, honoring the complexity of their ideas with clarity and accuracy. You will want to set the dialogue in a particular context—a talk show, a game show, a walk through the park, a series of e-mails, etc.—and you might also employ a moderator, or host, to ask questions and mediate the conversation. Remember, this is a dialogue, or conversation—not an argument—and your aim is to make clear both respondents’ views on forgiveness. Although they will express disagreement, their goal is not to win an argument but to come to a more enlightened understanding of each other. Audience • Readers who are familiar with Simon Wiesenthal’s central narrative and question in The Sunflower, but who may not be familiar with your two respondents. STEPS FOR SUCCESS AND DUE DATES Below you will find the necessary steps to complete in order to successfully write this paper. Note that due dates are included, but not everything will be submitted to Canvas. 1. Choose Two Respondents for Your Dialogue by Sunday, March 10th. Make sure the two respondents you choose are substantive and complex enough to offer adequate content for your paper. Choosing shorter, “easier” respondents may seem like less work, but ultimately these kinds of respondents won’t offer enough intellectual fuel to propel your paper. 2. Read Your Respondents’ Responses Multiple Times. Read the texts as many times as necessary to give you a complete understanding of the arguments. Note in the margins where they seem to be offering major claims, minor claims, and grounds for support. You need to be an expert on each respondent’s argument before you begin to write the paper. 3. Determine the claims, grounds, and warrants for each respondent. (GRADED ASSIGNMENT). Due by Wednesday, March 13th. Upload to Canvas Discussion. Type out each respondent’s major claims, minor claims, grounds, and, to the best of your ability, their warrants—or underlying assumptions. Without your knowledge of these elements, you won’t be able to begin the paper. 4. Read the Sample Papers. Get a sense of how other students have successfully approached this paper. Notice the variety of creative forms they employ (dialogue, letters, short story) and how each form changes how the respondents’ ideas are viewed and articulated on the page. 5. Choose a Creative Form and Context for Your Paper. You might write this like a script for a movie or a play, a series of letter or e-mails, a short story, a graphic novel, or something else you want to run by me. Any form or context is fine as long as it puts the two respondents into a dialogue. 6. Plan Out Your Paper. Due by Sunday, March 17th. (GRADED ASSIGNMENT). Upload to Canvas. Write a detailed outline that includes an introduction, opening statements by each respondent that offer an overview of their arguments (suggested), dialogue paragraphs that represent the respondents’ main claims and grounds (and sub-claims if applicable), and conclusion with closing statements. If you are employing a form that requires a moderator, also include where and how the moderator will interact with the respondents. 7. Write the introduction and opening paragraphs to your paper (GRADED DISCUSSION). Due by Wednesday, March 20th. Upload to Canvas. See sample papers for models. 8. Finish a First Draft of Your Paper (GRADED ASSIGNMENT). Due by Sunday, March 24th. Upload to Canvas. Use your outline as a guide to type out a first draft of your respondents’ dialogue. Each response should generally be one fully developed paragraph, with some exceptions—see sample papers. Depending on the form (e-mails or letters, for example), the responses may be even longer. 9. Schedule a Zoom Conference. Monday, April 1st – Thursday, April 4th. Make an appointment for an individual Zoom conference with Ryan to discuss your paper. In the interest of time, try to focus on 1 – 3 paragraphs that are most troubling you. If we have more time, we can discuss more. 10. Revise Your Paper. Based on the comments you received via Canvas Discussions and your individual meeting with Ryan, revise your paper. 11. Submit Your Final Draft. (GRADED ASSIGNMENT). Due by Sunday, April 7th. Upload a PDF, DOC, OR DOCX to Canvas. Grading Criteria 1. Does the paper put at least two respondents into a dialogue that clearly, accurately, and thoroughly reflects the complexity of their views on forgiveness? 2. Is the dialogue structured clearly and smoothly so that readers can follow the sequence of the respondents’ thoughts on forgiveness? 3. Is the dialogue given a creative context to help clarify and mediate the conversation? 4. Is the dialogue mostly free of grammatical and mechanical errors that might interfere with a reader’s understanding? 5. Does the paper include a Works Cited page formatted in proper MLA style?
