Key concepts: Relations to place/sentient place worlds
There are distinct bodies of cultural knowledge attached to the world. These attachments are often expressed as places of significance – home, ancestral territory, nation, cosmos. Humans find solace in place, we fight for place and many cultures imagine their essence and soul as having emerged from and one day returning to the place world. This week we focus on the place world, landscapes and seascapes – real and imagined – and how these come to encode and express cultural identity. How is it that humans across cultures differentially interact with space and turn it in to meaningful places, full of emotion, power, politics and attachment. Our film this week assists us in the exploration of the nature and extent of cultural framings of the sea.
