Select three (3) questions from the attached list for discussion and discuss/explain further what Acuña argues. On the attached list, you will see that a quote is connected with each question. Use quote as a beginning point of thought for each response.
The Acuña reading and the questions are attached at the bottom of the page.
Sample Answer:
What is mainstream history?
“For the mainstream scholar, research is the process of deduction from ‘accepted knowledge,’ acquired through established methods.” (Acuña page 1) Next, add your response here.
Mainstream history is created within the boundaries of existing theoretical frameworks and academic paradigms. Acuña argues that ethnic studies and women studies scholars work outside of the “mainstream” as a result of the multiple theoretical frameworks they work from. Challenging established disciplinary boundaries and creating new academic paradigms us at the heart of intellectual projects of working outside of mainstream history.
Assignment 4
Read and reflect on the essay “Who is a Chicano?” by Ruben Salazar.
2. Watch the video about Ruben Salazar. This is a short video clip from the PBS “Realidades” series that focuses on the question “Who is a Chicano?” The focus of the clip is on the Chicano journalist Ruben Salazar. Mr. Salazar was a prominent English (LA Times) and Spanish (La Opinion) language journalist from Los Angeles during the 1950s until his death on August 29, 1970. His writings on the social-political moments of the 1960s-70s (including the Vietnam War, the Chicano Movement and the Civil Rights Movement) have helped to understand the identity of the modern Chicano. Also, the play entitled “August 29th” in the video was a production that marked the death of Mr. Salazar at the Chicano Moratorium march in East Los Angeles against the war in Vietnam. This march was the largest protest against the Vietnam War by Chicano/Latinos in the United States.
Write: After you read the essay and watch video, write down 3-4 sentences reflecting on the question – According to Salazar, who wrote this essay in 1970, What is the meaning of taking on the identity of being Chicano and how does this relates to a larger American identity in 1970?
