Document Analysis and Reflection Essay: Read and review the Sources and the Questions for following: 1) SC 9.1“Journal of Charlotte Forten, Free Woman of Color” (in Chapter 9); 2) SC 11.1“Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Proposes Women’s Leadership (in Chapter 11), 3) SC 12.2 “Anna Julia Cooper Reflects on African American Women’s Potential”, 4) SC 12.4 “Dr. Rebecca Crumpler Encourages African American Women to Pursue Medicine, 1883,” and 5) SC 13.5 (“Lucy Laney on Negro Women’s Education and Leadership, 1899” (in Chapter 13).  In a  short reflection essay (250-300 words) discuss what these sources reveal about the status of and issues confronting African American women in the decades from emancipation through the end of the 1800s? Did these women think that the most critical issues involved race or gender based discrimination? What were some of their goals and expectations? Consider the photograph in this unit as an additional document. Why might historians consider the image an example of “respectability politics”?
