- Reflect on your experience with using telemedicine. How did telemedicine change the access of care to the patient being cared for?
- From my perspective and working in a medical facility that has implemented an advanced system of telemedicine, I can argue, based on my observation of the system utilization, that telemedicine is of great usefulness in healthcare. From my observation and experience with the advancement, there was an instance where a patient came to the hospital seeking a medical appointment with the medical specialist in the unit of eye care. The unit had an increased workload from different appointments with the medical specialist (CMS, 2020). Therefore, the patient was advised to book a virtual appointment with the doctor at a convenient time in the evening rather than incur more costs to get to the facility, considering the patient was from a deep rural area.
Therefore, the appointment through the platforms of telemedicine helped in increased patient or individual access to healthcare despite their locations. The patient was able to have a medical appointment with the doctor through the platform, which was fed with his medical history based on eye care. This made it easier for the medical specialist to determine the main issue with the patient and led to the continued assessment and monitoring of the patient easily through virtual meetings to facilitate medical examination (Haleem et al., 2021). Therefore, the implementation of advanced and innovative technology in the system of healthcare helped in bridging the underlying gap between medical professionals in medical facilities and patients, which has improved health access and results.
Furthermore, the adoption has led to the elimination of the patient’s need to incur costs, which benefits patients in rural areas despite the need for an internet connection. Telemedicine has provided medical benefits to patients through continuous monitoring that helps in expanding healthcare access (Snyder & Kerns, 2021). The advancement has facilitated continued healthcare by making certain of continuous patient monitoring, mainly for patients with different chronic complications that need progressive medical examination from medical professionals as well as the elderly.
