Annotated bibliography
These tasks are designed to introduce you to writing analytical style research papers that
adhere to proper APA formatting. The annotated bibliography is a powerful tool to help
organize and guide your research process. As you find sources, keep track of them using APA
formatting, but also make notes as to how this source can be useful for your research project.
For our purposes, the annotation will include a short summary of the source, as well as a short
assessment of how this source will be used for your essay. You will select three academic
sources for your annotated bibliography and find them using the MRU library database. Most
likely, they will be in the form of academic journal articles and secondary books. Encyclopedia
entries may be helpful with some topics, but in that case, only one of the three entries should
be in this format.
Please include topic and working thesis statement before you start your citations/annotations.
Research essay
For your literary analysis, you will write an essay on a photo essay of your choosing, as
discussed in class. If you are unsure if your selection fits the parameters of this assignment, you
are welcome to check with me after class or via email. Your essay will aim to evaluate the
argument being made by the photo essay with the help of the contextual research you did in
the above bibliography. You should use all three of your sources from the bibliography to help
provide context to your analysis, but you will be required to use at minimum five sources for
this assignment. The additional resources can come from our lectures, our textbook or other
sources that help form your analysis.
Your paper should have an introduction with a strong thesis, several supporting arguments with
examples (direct quotations/summaries from the texts and relevant contextual information)
that demonstrate your thesis, and a conclusion. You should carefully and thoughtfully analyze
your examples and ensure that they strongly support your thesis. Your mark will be based on
clarity of writing and thinking, organization, a clear understanding of the text in question, the
rigor of your analysis, your writing style, your adherence to APA guidelines, appropriate use of
research and your creativity. The research helps to provide theory/or context for your ideas,
but you still have to prove your points with evidence and ideas from our class learning and the
photo essay itself. Your paper should not simply repeat or summarize the photos used.

GNED 1404: Annotated bibliography and research essay
Remember, photo essays often use text to accompany images even though the images will be
the focus. This text can and should be included in your analysis. Make sure to select a photo
essay from a reputable news organization. These examples can be used for your analysis.
