Research Design Andjela Skrobonja San Diego State University COMM350 Professor Loo 03/17/2024 Research Design Research Topic Summary This research will focus on the complex interplay of mental toughness and professional tennis players’ performance and its role in it. Based on the approach of this study, mental toughness can be regarded as a player’s capability to respond to pressure, overcome setbacks, and pay focused attention to tasks in the challenging and highly competitive area of tennis. Mental aspects of tennis that entail not only physical abilities but also emotional resilience will be deeply examined. The forge of close personal matches put players on an examination of their attitude, focus, and determination that presents mental toughness value (Cowden et al., 2021). The study aims to unravel the mechanisms through which mental toughness benefits different components of performance, such as game outcomes, consistency, versatility in different conditions, and resilience in adverse situations. Furthermore, this research will consider the lived experiences of professional tennis players, which emphasizes the many dimensions of mental toughness in different people, an important aspect of understanding its effects on performance. Data Collection Method As the mainstay of this study involves the connection between mental toughness and performance in professional tennis, semi-structured interviews will be used as the main source of data. This approach yields a thorough analysis of tennis players’ feelings and thoughts on mental resilience and its impact on their game. With built-in questions about mental strength and performance related to mental toughness and performance, the interview will provide a structured dialogue canvas to build upon. This flexibility is the type of research because it enables a researcher to completely explore the depth of the participants’ responses, probably increasing the avenues of investigation that enhance the study’s insights (Rezigalla, 2020). The choice of semi-structured interviews is strategic for several reasons. First of all, such a method helps to build a deep understanding of the player’s experience and point of view, which is fundamental for revealing the mental resilience complexities in professional tennis. Besides, interviewing flexibility is its advantage, which enables researchers to look at unexpected revelations and respond to them dynamically (Curtis et sl., 2023). Consequently, this kind of format offers an explanatory background to participants’ experiences, thus enabling them to accumulate an understanding of how mental toughness develops in the context of professional tennis performance. Therefore, the depth and applicability of the findings are improved. Data Analysis Method Thematic analysis becomes the principal means of analysis of the data gathered from semi-structured interviews with professional tennis players on mental toughness and performance. With this approach, researchers can profoundly pinpoint, scrutinize, and portray various patterns in qualitative data, thus providing a more profound comprehension of the interaction between mental fortitude and performance in the field of professional tennis. The process starts with data familiarization by scanning the document multiple times to understand the meaning and provide the first draft codes. Consequently, data is classified into codes, and then these codes are organized into potential themes, with relevant findings under each theme being gathered to initiate the analysis process. Based on this approach, the methodological decision is justified by its flexibility and the capacity of the method to obtain detailed information from the qualitative data. The purpose of thematic analysis is not only to extract similar ideas from different participants but also to understand the mechanisms of the diversity of perceptions as well as experience. Although theme analysis may take a long time, its flexibility and tendency to show unexpected results that coincide with the complexity of the nature of mental strength and its effect on performance in professional tennis is beneficial. Therefore, thematic analysis is the most fitting approach for this research, and it is proficient enough to produce all-encompassing and valuable conclusions. Research Procedure: The first three weeks are a step-by-step procedure that starts with an extensive review of literature involving sports psychology, mental toughness, and performance in tennis. Thus, this critical analysis not only leads to the following stages but also indicates any weaknesses in the present understanding, thereby pointing the direction of the study. In the fourth week, with the rudimentary knowledge gained through the reading, the research formalizes successively the design of a detailed semi-structured interview guide. This guide is intricately constructed to aid me in conducting the interviews with professional tennis players for an on-focus and yet flexible data collection. During week five, there will be documented interviews with professional tennis players carried out during the period of research, which will serve as the pulse of the research. This stage lays the groundwork for the participants to narrate their emotional experiences and their understanding of mental toughness and its contribution to overall performance. The semi-structured character of those interviews brings about spontaneous talk, enabling the researcher to explore unforeseen lines of thought. Week six will entail transcribing, with the recorded conversations being converted excruciatingly to written texts that pave the way for the thematic analysis that follows. This analytical path can take an extension of one week, during which I determine the presence of patterns and themes before combining them into one finding. After reaching its peak, the final stage of the research occurs in the form of a detailed report, whereby findings are communicated, implications are explored, and conclusions are drawn, thereby bringing to a close the process of an intense investigation into the interdependence between mental fortitude and performance in professional tennis. This period can take up to one week. References Rezigalla, A. A. (2020). Observational study designs: Synopsis for selecting an appropriate study design.
