Answer the discussion prompt below (based Chapter 7 from your text and the lectures from 02-28 and 03-02). RESPOND TO ONE OTHER student’s post within your group. In your response, make sure you specify where and why you agree with something in that post AND then something new you would like to add to the post and/or (respectfully!) disagree with it. Since we were a couple of slides short from finishing the social mobility section of the Thursday, March 2 lecture, make sure you look at those last 3 slides and watch the video “Is American Dreaming?”, which is posted separately in the 03-02 module.
Using the lecture video, notes, your book, and the video “Is America Dreaming?” define social mobility. Briefly discuss whether social mobility chances are increasing or decreasing based on the 03-02 lecture and the “Is America Dreaming?” video. Using your sociological imagination, then choose someone you know (this could be yourself) and discuss their past (or future) social mobility chances relative to their parents. Include in your discussion how BOTH inherited factors as well as structural factors (as defined in the lecture) have (or may) affect their social mobility up or down in the U.S. stratification system.
