Caring is a core concept of the HCC Nursing Program. As you likely recall from your Fundamentals course, Madeleine Leninger is one of the pioneer researchers in the field of transcultural nursing. For this discussion you will first need to review the Position Statement of the Transcultural Nursing Society (TCNS). As you read, focus on the Historical Perspectives on Human Rights. Then, read the article  What do Health Literacy and Cultural Competency Have in Common?

After reading this article, reflect upon and answer the following:

1. Does “ethnocentrism, lack of awareness and moral blindness perpetuate and exacerbate healthcare inequities?” (TCNS position statement). If so, how?
2. A patient’s understanding of health care information may be affected by a health care provider’s cultural competence. Explain how health literacy and cultural competence are linked. Can a nurse demonstrate caring without cultural competence?
3. How can nurses reduce healthcare inequities by focusing on communicating in a caring, culturally competent way?
