GLOBAL CULTURAL AND ETHICS
Global 110 Global Culture and Ethics WINTER 2024 FINAL EXAM (DUE TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 3:00 PM) For your final exam, you have a CHOICE between two essay prompts. Each prompt includes three parts that are intentionally broad so that you have the flexibility to develop your own ideas, which we hope will coalesce into a well-structured analysis. (Please note that you are also being graded on analysis, argument, flow, cohesion, grammar, and overall structure of your paper). Your essay must be typed, double-spaced and in Times New Roman 12-point font. Your answers must be in proper essay format, with a short introduction, body and short conclusion. Essays should have 1 inch margins on all sides. The essay is limited to 1200 words (about 5 pages). You have a 20-word cushion. Please do not use quotes. When paraphrasing, cite author and page number. No need for a work-cited page. Please also highlight your authors in bold font. Submission Guidelines: You must upload your exam (PDF version) on Canvas by 3pm on Tuesday, March 19. If you are having technical difficulties submitting your paper on canvas, please email me and attach your exam. Please note that the policy for late papers does not apply to the final exam. This means that papers submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Your exam is not considered submitted if you do not comply with these instructions. Extraordinary circumstances must be addressed before the deadline, not after the exam is due. CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ESSAY PROMPTS: OPTION 1: Feminism (Waves), Global feminism, Universal Sisterhood, and Intersectionality How does feminism, as a movement and ideology, expose the tensions between the local and the global when it comes to forming alliances along the notion of “universal sisterhood” to achieve a more humane and unified world? In what way does an inclusive global feminist framework offer us a set of tools to both critique binary and dichotomized modes of organizing the world and tackle issues such as patriarchy, violence, inequality and intolerance? To answer questions in Essay 1, make sure you: (1) substantially engage four (4) articles from weeks 6, 7, 8, 9 of the course. You must choose an article from each week. Please highlight your authors in bold font in the essay; (2) discuss the notion of intersectionality (as analytical framework and/or concept in Feminist discourse) AND maternal colonialism; (3) incorporate ideas and scenes from the film “Where Do We Go Now?” to strengthen your analysis. OPTION 2: Representation of Muslims and Islam, Indigenous Peoples; Fundamentalism, Anti-globalism/Anti-modernism, Universal Enemy, Recognition, Savage How do ideas about modernity impact the way narratives and discourses about the Middle East OR Indigenous communities are formed? In what way do these narratives evoke a problematic notion of civilization and feed on certain repetitive binaries (i.e. tradition vs. modern; Islam vs. Christianity; Indigenous world vs. Western World) that continue to create divisions among peoples, communities, and cultures? How do anti-globalism/anti-modernism movements attempt to counter these narratives and in what way do they repeat the binaries? To answer questions in Essay 2, make sure you: (1) substantially engage four (4) articles from weeks 6, 7, 8, and 9 of the course. You must choose an article from each week. Please highlight your authors in bold font in the essay; (2) discuss the notion of universal enemy (in representations of the “Indian” OR the “bad Muslim”) AND maternal colonialism; (3) incorporate ideas and scenes from the film “Where Do We Go Now?” OR apply the case of Aboriginal peoples in Australia.
