Write an introduction about a Chinese festival
Ritual Observation Description For this assignment, you will be asked to write a short description of an observed ritual from an anthropological perspective. You will first choose a ritual to observe that you are already familiar with and can gain access to without disruption – this need not be “religious” in nature. Think of any religious service you may attend already, a sports ritual you have, holiday dinners with family, yoga classes, etc. that you may have access to, in order to do some quiet note taking and observation. You will then write a brief, 5 page (~1200-1500), double spaced, ethnographic report describing the ritual, and relate it to class content – what type of ritual is it? How was it transformative? What function did it serve? What did it “do” for the people involved, and why/how does it matter that it is “action”? How does it relate to other concepts we’ve discussed in class? Here are some notes: • Make sure to choose a ritual that you can observe or that you participate in with others, so don’t choose a ritual that you do alone (so no solo yoga or meditation!) • This is purely about observation to avoid having to get ethics approval! So you don’t need to interview or otherwise talk to people (unless you are going to a religious service or the like where you have an established community – then chat away) • When you write, try to describe what you’ve observed in the most detail you can – make it feel like I (as your audience) was there too! Most importantly, a ritual is about action, so what does it FEEL like to be there or go through it? • After your description, make sure to answer the questions provided in the description: connect it to course content by explaining (like a good ethnography) what the ritual does for people. In order to do that, think about why people might be there, why they do the ritual over and over again, and how it was transformative – how were people different at the end vs. when they first arrived? What type of ritual do you think it was? • Make sure to write in full sentences, without headings – don’t use point form, but describe it in rich detail, and use transition words to move from one idea to the next.
