Week 2 Workshop
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WORKSHOP: WEEK 2 BY DAY 7 Please revisit your Workshop thread and add to or refine your research problem and purpose statement process. Add other comments that summarize the development of your research ideas. SUBMISSION INFORMATION Post to the Workshop Discussion using the Workshop Forum link. Due to the nature of this assignment, your instructor may require more than 7 days to provide you with quality feedback. Feedback received (do to not submitting anything) Riley, I did not see a clear RQ in your post. Please post it at the top of your week 2 workshop. Thanks for your first workshop post. You will develop your ‘mock study’ over the next few weeks and as we dig more deeply into the process, I’ll offer tweaks, tips, and focused guidance to you directly in your workshop thread (so check my feedback in your week 1 workshop area for details). Please return to your Week 1 workshop (Workshop forum found in the Discussion board) and review my feedback. Be sure to address my feedback at the beginning of your Week 2 workshop entry. You should also post the current draft of your working Research Question at the top of each thread entry from this point forward. If you lost points, it is likely due to a faulty research question. Do not panic – most students lose points in the first few workshops and it will not adversely impact your grade at this point. Read the feedback provided in your workshop thread for week 1 and plan to restate your revised RQ in the Week 2 Workshop forum (found in the Discussion board). ***As a reminder, please only post your new/weekly workshop entries in the corresponding thread. For example, Week 2 workshop, Week 3 workshop, etc. Here are some things I want you to keep in mind as we move through the WS’s. First, do NOT panic if your first workshop grade is lower than you expected. This happens in every course and I assure you, things will come together soon. TRUST THE PROCESS. Please pay especially close attention to your research questions (RQs), purpose statement, and problem statement during this course. The methodology we will focus on here is qualitative and although that may NOT be the approach you want to use for your dissertation, you will gain an appreciation for the design. I will offer feedback directly in the workshop thread on most weeks. Be sure to check your thread each week to determine if you have received approval for your RQ. Research questions: Just as with the other components of the dissertation, the research questions must be aligned with the other components and must come from the problem statement and the theoretical foundations of your dissertation. These questions cannot be closed questions that require a simple yes or no. Research questions must be open-ended questions that focus the research and address the “problem” that has been presented as the basis for the research. If you are conducting qualitative research, you will be using questions that ask “how”, “why”, or “what”. You will be asking these questions as they relate to the phenomena that you have identified. For example, • How are the experiences of combat veterans related to their ability to adapt to a teaching career? • What skills or experiences of military veterans increased their retention as teachers of those veterans who enter a second career within the teaching field? • Why do military veterans who enter a second career within the teaching field remain in the field? On the other hand, quantitative research questions are focused on the either the relationship between variables or the effect of treatments. Usually, the questions will include to what extent the relationship exists and the variables and how they will be measured are within the question. For example, • What is the relationship, if any, between distributed leadership and the self-efficacy of teachers in public K-5 schools in Pinal County, Arizona as measured by Distributed Leadership Inventory (DLI) and Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (TSES)? • To what extent does a relationship exist, if any, between the use of Cognitive Coaching and dispute resolution of employees in a large public corporation in Phoenix, Arizona, as measured by the Cognitive Coaching Assessment Tool (CCAT) and Dispute Resolution Satisfaction Scale (DRSS)? You can contact me via email at [email protected] if you have questions, but I doubt you’ll really have much opportunity to refine until after the Wk 2 workshop. Hang in there. Continue reading and refining and get ready to learn more about qual than you ever thought was possible. –DR M OVERALL IDEA Topic is over more domestic violence since COVID 19 (during and after) due to lockdown and space requirements and people being more prone to anger. THIS IS FROM WEEK ONE AS A REFERENCE: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WORKSHOP: WEEK 1 Note on Weekly Workshops: This course has been designed as an ongoing workshop in which you and your classmates work collaboratively to develop and refine your qualitative research plans. You may already be familiar with Discussion threads that focus on one topic and are limited to one week’s worth of commenting. In this course, in addition to participating in typical week-long Discussions, you will create a response to this Dicussion for your research question that will remain active throughout the course. You will return to this initial response each week to post new content and refinements. Your classmates will all do the same. Your Instructor will also review and comment on your process. As you build on your initial post, you will also be asked to visit your classmates’ threads and share your perspective, advice, feedback, and critiques of their work. You and your classmates will be encouraged to use the Workshop threads as a sounding board for new ideas and for activity related to the formal weekly Workshop assignments. Keep in mind that the more you participate, the more you and your classmates will get out of the course experience. In this week’s Workshop, you will introduce yourself to your classmates and reflect on where you are in the preparation for your capstone. In this Workshop you will describe the following: • • • • The topic as your passion Your topic as a research problem, purpose, and question as it stands right now Challenges you are experiencing in developing a good research problem, purpose, and question (or, if you are happy with them, share the research problem, purpose and research question) Use the “Litmus Test” document found in the Learning Resources to guide your self-reflection. RESOURCES Be sure to review the Learning Resources before completing this activity. Click the weekly resources link to access the resources. WEEKLY RESOURCES To prepare for this Workshop: • • Review the criteria outlined in the research “Litmus Test,” which can be found in this week’s Learning Resources. Review the qualitative checklist for Chapters 1 through 3. You can find the appropriate checklist in the Learning Resources through the links to the PhD dissertation program and EdD doctoral study web pages, as applicable to your program. BY DAY 6 Click the Reply button to create your response. In the response, submit a brief reflection of your progress, including a proposed research question that could be used with your current research interest. Be sure to include responses to the following: • • • Reflect on how well your research problem meets the “Litmus Test.” At this point, you recognize that this is a work in progress, so identify what could be done to better reveal a research gap. Summarize the skills and subject matter areas you will need to master to expertly respond to the qualitative checklist for Chapters 1 through 3. Propose a research question to be developed throughout the rest of this course.
