Chapter 3 focuses on Theatre Spaces. There have been many opportunities in my career where there have been a variety of theatre spaces I have produced. Here are a couple of examples:
Edinburgh Fringe Festival – a wonderful month-long festival that pretty much takes over the city in Scotland. Visit if you have the opportunity. You must see to believe. Theatre happens on the streets, in bars, churches, and gathering places not traditional. In fact, The Hollywood Fringe Festival has a similar vibe if you are looking for something local.
Theatre at the La Crescenta Motel. Yes, you read that correctly. We created the “motel plays” – 8 – 10 minute plays that were staged in motel rooms. Audiences went four to a room and watched the drama unfold. When they were done with one, they were ushered into the next room, doors closed, and the play began. Actors essentially did 6 performances back to back of the plays. Really exciting and an amazing theatrical experience.
- But how did Theatre adapt during COVID and lockdown? What did the industry learn?
- Theatre Practitioners have had to quickly adapt to the current events of COVID-19 pandemic and live events. Some new definitions of Theatre have evolved:

Filmed Recorded
“Zoom Theatre” – with a big discussion of “is it theatre?”
- Edited and Live Broadcast
- In addition, companies examined their mission statements, which included diversity, equity and inclusion in Theatre. And how theatre became more accessible when viewers were able to watch from home. Let’s continue the discussion here.
