Assignment Overview Topic: How would conservatives explain street crime in impoverished areas? Instead of conservatives, your group may choose liberals, or neoliberals, or social democrats, or Anishinaabe political theorists (or Haudenosaunee or Nehiyo or other Turtle Island Indigenous theorists). Note: This assignment is 80% completed as a group, only Introduction questions, 4 a&b and 5 needs to be answered. When completed Introduction question, and questions 4 and 5 please put the entire assignment in PowerPoint presentation style to be presented. Please read through the assignment carefully. Choose only one ideology: Conservative Assume the role of a social worker of that ideology. You will present a brief case study illustrating the problem (crime), how the problem is assessed (from that ideological perspective), and possible routes of intervention (again, consistent with the ideology). (5 points) social beliefs: (BH) conservatives are opposed to abortion, and same sex marriage. They support the right to carry a gun, and for personal responsibility as an individual. economic beliefs: (BH) They believe in a free market system, competitive capitalism and private enterprise. They believe that these promote the best opportunity for society and set a higher standard for people to live up to. It is believed that free markets provide better economic growth, and better job opportunities than others who have excessive government regulation. political beliefs (briefly): (BH) Conservatives are right-winged and support less regulation by the government. They aim to have most services given by a private sector in the free market and have a very literal view. They aim to support more traditional values. They believe that more government regulation does more harm than good. 1b. Value authority and obedience • • • • View law and order as a cornerstone of society Believe that individuals should be held accountable for their actions and place an emphasis on punishment, as opposed to rehabilitation or restorative justice. Often use “tough on crime” as a cornerstone of political platforms and push for mandatory sentencing, use of solitary confinement and revoking of bail. In favour of cutting rehabilitation or supportive programming in prisons opting for more punitive measures. 3.
