Some, such as war artists14, document these events. Others use their art as a powerful tool to raise awareness of issues in the news and hope to change people’s minds. For many artists, making art is a way of expressing their feelings about news stories – whether anger, sadness, or excitement. How news is reported and circulated is also something many artists explore through art, often adopting approaches used by the media their message across.” — Tate: News and Event Coursework Guide 15 Complete one of the following options below: 5https://www.artnews.com/art-news/product-recommendations/best-mixed-media-paper-pads-1234584537/ 6http://sarahogren.blogspot.com/2011/04/choosing-surface-for-your-collage.html 7https://www.hobbylobby.com/Art-Supplies/Painting-Supplies/Acrylic-Painting/Matte-Medium/p/6195 8https://www.target.com/p/mod-podge-8oz-craft-glue-satin/-/A-18837412#lnk=sametab 9https://www.tate.org.uk/art/student-resource/exam-help/news-events 10http://www.platypusfile.com/sketchbook-prompts/2019/4/26/sketchbook-prompt-10-collage 11https://youtu.be/whyXxfmCbTA 12http://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/d/documentary-photography 13https://dcccd.kanopy.com/video/how-draw 14https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/w/war-artists 15https://www.tate.org.uk/art/student-resource/exam-help/news-events • Photo Re-Make • Making the Cut OPTIONAL: create more than one version of each and/or try both Assignment Options: Best News Photos of 2023 16 There are a lot of photo options for this journal assignment, so I’ve put them on a separate page (photo options link17). Please choose only from the photo options at the link, not the entire selection of photos on each site. These are compelling images of recent news events around the world. I have purposely omitted some of the most notorious stories, since most of us have seen and thought about them a lot already. Ideally, you’ll choose an image/story you don’t know as much about. Read more about the event depicted and think about what you want viewers to know about it. Option 1: Photo Re-Make “Artists Richard Hamilton18, Marlene Dumas19, and William Sasnal20 often use photographs of events from the media as sources for their paintings. By reinterpreting these photographs using the physical qualities of paint, they present the images in a new light. We see the subjects in a different way and are made to reflect on our usual habits of looking at everyday photographic images.” See also: Kota Ezawa21 Thomas Demand22 Select one of the news images listed above. Re-make your own version the image using drawing materials, paint, and/or collage. Recall the techniques you practiced in Journals 1 23 and 224 — consider using one or more of these as the basis for your re-make. 16https://sway.cloud.microsoft/KcYn0wX1TyIUdHbs?ref=Link 17https://sway.cloud.microsoft/KcYn0wX1TyIUdHbs?ref=Link 18https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/richard-hamilton-1244 19https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/marlene-dumas-2407 20https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/wilhelm-sasnal-7553 21https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-kota-ezawas-flat-stylized-paintings-animations-new-light-historic- events 22https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20140915-inside-saddam-husseins-kitchen 23https://sway.office.com/E0mrYYGdL7whi1u9?ref=Link Suggestions: • Re-create the proportions of the image by using a grid25. • Simplify the image by using only contour lines26 or a monochromatic palette27 (one color + white, gray, black). • Crop the image28 and re-create a small area of focus. • Replace some areas of the image with unexpected colors29, textures30, or patterns. – Draw/paint the areas or add collage elements ◦ How to use acrylic medium with collage31 ◦ How to use Mod Podge with collage32 Your submission should be more than a straightforward copy. I am looking for some form of creative replacement, reproportioning, refocusing, or other visual interest to set the composition apart. Option 2: Making the Cut Select two or more of the news image options above. Look for images that convey similar themes or moods across different cultures, or for scenes that contrast each other in notable ways. The combination of images should make them compelling to the viewer. Print the images or re-create them by hand. Try different arrangements of the images next to each other, layered, or with other photographs or images added to them. (These could be pictures from magazines, patterns, or textures). When you’ve decided on an effective composition, secure it to a sturdy surface (mixed-media paper, collage board, etc.) using acrylic medium or Mod Podge. (Rubber cement can also be used, but it may discolor some elements.) • How to use acrylic medium with collage33 • How to use Mod Podge with collage34 Work on or around your collage with paint, drawing materials, or mixed media. Recall the techniques you practiced in Journals 135 and 236 — consider using one or more of these as the basis for your collage. 24https://sway.office.com/B14iNTEFgybMTpzf?ref=Link 25https://thevirtualinstructor.com/draw-with-a-grid.html 26https://mrs-cook.weebly.com/contour-line.html 27https://youtu.be/DycrwllzvP8 28https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/edu/lesson/concepts-cropping 29http://art.mcngraphics.com/using-unexpected-colors/ 30https://www.nga.gov/learn/teachers/lessons-activities/elements-of-art/texture.html 31https://www.liquitex.com/row/tips/collaging/ 32https://modpodgerocksblog.com/make-a-magazine-collage/ 33https://www.liquitex.com/row/tips/collaging/ 34https://modpodgerocksblog.com/make-a-magazine-collage/ Suggestions: • Consider how the arrangement changes the impact or meaning of the news stories if you put them next to images from other sources. • Crop certain areas37 or objects from each of them. • Use images of different proportions together: a small scene next to a large one 38, large and small patterns39, etc. • Create a series of separate collages using the same image in different ways. • Use a computer program or app with picture editing tools to make a digital collage or moving image collage. (Drawing/physical collage is preferred unless you have experience making digital works.) Your submission should be more than just two images pasted together. I am looking for some form of creative placement, enhancement, or other visual interest to set the composition apart. Review/See Also: Miguel Luciano, Pelea de Gallos (Fight of the Roosters)40 Martha Rosler, Bringing the War Home 41 Ellen Gallagher42 Summary Your complete submission should include one or more works, each on a separate page. The overall submission should reflect a sufficient amount of time and effort — this can be attained through one detailed and complete work or a set of experimental versions of the images. 35https://sway.office.com/E0mrYYGdL7whi1u9?ref=Link 36https://sway.office.com/B14iNTEFgybMTpzf?ref=Link 37https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/edu/lesson/concepts-cropping 38https://isfdn.org/art-docent-lessons/2nd-grade/playing-with-proportion-photomontage/ 39https://i.pinimg.com/736x/64/10/79/6410792b637d843699de7018fc9e2d37.jpg 40https://www.learner.org/series/art-through-time-a-global-view/converging-cultures/pelea-de-gallos-fight-of-the- roosters/ 41https://blogs.getty.edu/iris/the-living-room-war-a-conversation-with-artist-martha-rosler/ 42https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/ellen-gallagher-9553 • As a very rough guide, your submission should fill the equivalent of at least one 8.5 x 11″ sheet of paper in total. NEXT: Follow the instructions at the top of this page to photograph and save your composition[s] as one PDF. Return to eCampus43 and submit your PDF in the Journal/Sketch 3 assignment area. 43http://ecampus.dcccd.edu
