A family is a dynamic system. It is a living organization of members who interact and influence each other. A change in any one component of the system will inevitably cause a change in the system, which will cause a change in the other components. Even a positive change can destabilize the system; however, the conscientious counselor can assist the family in establishing a new and healthy homeostasis.
Systems theory focuses on the relationship between components, rather than the components themselves. Family systems counselors identify relational patterns, the roles of each member, and the unspoken rules of the family. By doing so, counselors can anticipate systemic destabilization and facilitate appropriate systemic adjustment.
