EDU 350 Course Project Overview and Planning Assignment One of the many responsibilities of teachers is to effectively plan for students collectively and individually. The process of planning requires a variety of steps and aspects that compound to create an ideal plan that is developmentally appropriate for students, displays an appropriate level of rigor, and addresses the learning needs of all learners. There are a variety of planning formats that exist, however, regardless of format all plans have the following areas in common: • • • • Identified Standards Learning Objectives Teaching and Learning Strategies Assessment Methods Using the unit plan outline format below, you will spend the next few modules designing a lesson that incorporates the previously mentioned aspects of planning formats. Part 1 – Module 6: Identify the Topic and Standards • • • Select a learning topic or theme. The theme can be anything you want to teach children. Make sure the theme is appropriate for the age you are interested in teaching. Identify the appropriate learning standards you will use to write your lesson plan. Early Childhood (ECE) and Elementary Education (ELE) majors will focus on the standards that apply. Select one standard from four different content areas (you should have four standards) – Topic/Theme: Animals Around the World. -Grade/Age: Kindergarten -Learning Standards (one per content/subject area). Include the number and the description: 1- 1.B.ECb With teacher assistance, participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners (e.g., peers and adults in both small and large groups) about age-appropriate topics and texts. Kindergarten Common Core, speaking and listening 1-1a, 1-1b. 2- 8.A.ECa sort, order, compare, and describe objects according to characteristics or attribute(s).36 Kindergarten mathematics Common Core, measurement and data, 1-3. 3- 12.C.ECa identify, describe, and compare the physical properties of objects. 4- 17.A.Kc Show beginning awareness of the relationships between people and where they live. Part 2 Module 6: Designing Objectives Create one objective (Students will be able to…) to align with each standard identified 1. English Language Arts – students will be able to read and write about different animals. 2. Math – students will be able to count and graph animal data. 3. Science – students will be able to explore the habitats and characteristics of animals. 4. Social Studies – students will be able to identify different cultures and their relationship with Animals. • • Part 3: Module 7: Identify and Design Assessments Design two formative (informal) assessments that align with the identified standards and objectives. Also, describe when you will implement the assessment (at what point in the learning process will you check for understanding?) Formative #1 – Formative #2 Describe a summative (formal) assessment that aligns with the identified standards and objectives. Summative #1 Part 4 Module 8: Identify and Design Assessments • Design either an authentic assessment OR a performance assessment that aligns with the standards and objectives identified in your plan. Be very specific in how the assessment will reveal student learning. IF your summative assessment from Part 3 falls into the category of authentic/performance assessments, DESCRIBE (approximately a paragraph) how that assessment is “real world” applicable. Authentic OR Performance Assessment Description: Part 5 Module 9: Learning Strategies • After completing this week’s readings (and the first assignment): Identify one effective learning strategy that aligns with one of the different standards and objectives identified in parts one and two. Describe an activity that students can do that aligns with the strategy you choose. Include a list of possible materials needed to implement the strategies/lessons.
