College American Dual-energy X- ray absorptiometry discussion
1- A. I would be most likely to use Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) as a measurement method. DEXA is a highly accurate and reliable technique for assessing body composition, including bone density, muscle mass, and fat mass. It provides detailed information about the distribution of lean mass and fat mass throughout the body, making it particularly useful for evaluating changes in body composition over time. Additionally, DEXA is non-invasive, quick, and relatively easy to perform, making it suitable for use in both research and clinical settings. B. I would be least likely to use skinfold thickness measurements as a measurement method. Skinfold measurements involve using calipers to measure the thickness of skinfold sites at various locations on the body, and then using mathematical equations to estimate body fat percentage. While skinfold measurements can provide a rough estimate of body composition, they are less accurate and reliable compared to other methods such as DEXA or hydrostatic weighing. Skinfold measurements are also highly dependent on the skill and experience of the person performing the measurements, as well as factors such as hydration status and the presence of subcutaneous fluid. Therefore, skinfold measurements may not provide sufficiently precise or consistent results for assessing changes in body composition accurately. 2- For the measurement method I would be most likely to use, I would choose the skin fold measurement with calipers. This is because it is widely accepted and practical method for assessing body composition By measuring the thickness of skin folds at various sites on the body, you can estimate the amount of subcutaneous fat. This method is relatively simple to perform and can provide a fairly accurate representation of overall body fat percentage. On the other hand, the measurement method I would be least likely to use is the video measuring body composition method. While it may seem convenient and accessible, there are several limitations to this approach. Firstly, accurate measurement of body composition requires precise positioning and a consistent environment, which may be challenging achieve through videos. Additionally, the accuracy of this method can be influenced by like lighting, camera angle, and the distance between the subject and the camera. Therefore, I would prefer a measurement method that allows for more direct and controlled assessment of body composition, like skin fold measurement with calipers. Ultimately, it is important to choose a measurement that aligns with your specific needs and resources. Consider factors such as, convenience, and cost deciding which method to use. Additionally it always beneficial to seek professional guidance or consult with an expert in the field to ensure accurate and reliable measurements. 3- 1. My thoughts on eating disorders in female athletes is that it’s a very bad thing because their mental health declines just based off this specific disorder. They quit playing their sports and had to focus on eating less because of how bad the eating disorder became. They couldn’t focus on anything else and because the eating disorders stopped them from doing so. It’s shocking how an eating disorder can change your life if you don’t take care of it. 2. I believe the issue is the same for male athletes because they also go through the same things that the women did. If they’re athletes, they’d have to take a break from their sports and focus on losing that weight. I feel like most men try to hide the fact that they have eating disorders but overall, they go through the same things. Millions of men out there are affected by this disorder which is a very high number. We humans have to watch what we eat no matter what gender we are because they can definitely harm us if we’re not careful. 4-1. What are your thoughts on eating disorders in female athletes? My thoughts are that it is very sad. Being an ex female athlete, it really is sad to see your fellow teammates and friends struggle with eating disorders. During college softball, one of my roommates struggled with an eating disorder, she would skip meals and exercise excessively if she overate the night before. Food wasn’t seen to be energizing, it was viewed as the enemy. She would take laxatives to lose weight. But, if you are taking laxatives, you are dehydrating yourself a lot. It is not healthy or safe to be doing this and to think that she was doing it because she didn’t like her body is so sad. The fact that 1 in 3 female athletes are at risk to get an eating disorder is truly heartbreaking. Society needs to stop acting like being skinny is the only way to be beautiful because it is leading to more and more eating disorders. Little girls look up to these female athletes and if they are pressing to be skinny, it is going to lead to young girls getting eating disorders as well. It is very sad that so many women athletes struggle with this. 2. Is the issue the same for male athletes? Explain. Eating disorders are common in male athletes, just like it is among female athletes. It is just less spoken about. Men think they need to be tough and mentally strong, they think they shouldn’t struggle with anything. But, like the video showed, men struggle with eating disorders as well. Mike Majarma is shedding light on men having eating disorders as well. He said how he wasn’t able to play his freshman year because he was hospitalized. He stated that the only way to get a girlfriend was by having a 6 pack. So, he didn’t eat and worked out as much as he could. This was detrimental to his health. If you are not eating and excessively working out, you wont be gaining muscle, you will lose any muscle you have and all the essential fat you had. 1 in 3 people who have eating disorders are male and 10 million men will be affected by eating disorders in the United States. This is heartbreaking, we need to learn from a young age how to fuel your body. We need to teach younger kids that food is fuel and that we need to eat to be healthy and strong. If we teach younger kids, maybe they will grow up with a healthier view on food and fuel. Also, women struggling with eating disorders are common to hear about but men, not so much. Mike Majarma was very brave to speak out about this because he will help younger boys and adult men to get the help they need.
