SPECIAL OCCASION SPEECH – 2-4 MINUTES (100 POINTS) Speech Delivered (50 points) AND Emailed/Printed Transcript due (50 points) Create a 2-4-minute Special Occasion speech. Your purpose will be to Entertain, Celebrate, Commemorate, Inspire, or Set a Social Agenda (ECCIS), depending on the conventional expectations of the occasion/event. First, choose your speaking scenario; it can be completely fictional, i.e. you can make up the event and people involved. Types of scenarios may include: • • • • Banquet, Award Dinners or Toasts (entertain) Wedding, Anniversary, or dedication of people, places or events (celebrate) Memorial Ceremony for a person or a place (commemorate) Inauguration, Keynote or Commencement Address (inspire) Make sure to consider your audience and their expectations. If you can, find a way to redefine their expectations, so your speech is less formulaic or disposable. Depending on the setting, for instance, the audience may expect a speech that appeals to pathos by eliciting strong emotions like empathy, humor, determination, or even anger. But in order to create an emotional bond with your audience, you must establish your own credibility or connection to the occasion (ethos). To facilitate this, please write a preamble for the speech. This should be on the same document as your transcript and should cover all the ‘wh’ questions and the overall purpose of the speech; the preamble will be explained or read, but it will not be timed.
