Communications Question
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH PRESENTATION #3
For this research paper, the length must be 3-5 pages in length. APA style is required. Make note that your cover page and References do NOT count toward the page total. You do not need to include an abstract. It is required that you specifically cite the main text in our course, Understanding Intercultural Communication, at least twice AND include a minimum of one additional scholarly, academic resource. The additional source must connect clearly and substantively with something discussed in your paper. You are welcome and encouraged to cite more than this as desired and/or needed. If you have questions about this, you are encouraged to ask your professor sooner rather than later.
An Intercultural Event
Your research paper is on a cultural event related to a culture that is not your own. The cultural event can be anything you desire; however, it must be relevant to our course content. The cultural event can be something you have attended in the past, want to attend, and/or plan to attend in the future.
Your paper should clearly demonstrate your knowledge of concepts taught in class. This means that you are expected to cite ideas from the textbook clearly and fully, with explanations and examples. To assist in doing so, look at the following list to ensure you address a variety of areas when writing:
- Provide background on the cultural event. Describe the event – history, location(s), number of people attending, time of day/night, length of event, etc.
- What is the purpose of the event?
- What cultural group originating the event?
- How did you learn about it?
- Are there similar events in your own culture?
- Have you attended this event personally? If not, why not? Explain your interest. Describe some of the cultural aspects of the event in detail. If yes, what did you experience culturally? Was there anything you felt confident you understood? What did you notice that was puzzling to you?
- Are there any challenges with intercultural communication between people from your cultural group and the group sponsoring the event?
- How did you respond personally to being in a different cultural situation that was not as predictable as communication in your culture?
- Describe an important conclusion about intercultural communication related to one’s participation in this event. End memorably, not abruptly.
