Module 3: Discussion Forum
Please answer each part separately ( part 1 then part 2 as a separate question)
Part 1
Introduction: This week, you were introduced to how epidemiologists and public health practitioners collect disease information. The two main avenues are passive and active surveillance. Each has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, due to the natural history of disease one option may be preferred over another. Your goal today is to explore the 2 surveillance systems that are in place to assess your selected community health issue.
Initial Post: Please consider the public health issue you have selected for your portfolio project. What state or federal systems are currently in place to collect information on this health issue? Describe whether or not these systems are active or passive surveillance and the potential impact this can have on the data quality on your topic.
Part 2
Introduction: This week you were introduced to the concept of walkability and the impact that environmental pollution can have on chronic diseases. It can be easy to observe issues within your own community, but what can be challenging is to assess and compare your community or local environment to others. In this discussion, you will select one of two tools with which to evaluate your local community on either pollution or walkability.
Initial Post: After reading the required materials, please select one of the activities to complete.
Option 1:
- Please visit the Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool.Links to an external site.
- Then click on the link marked launch the tool. In the upper right hand corner of the screen is a search bar marked Find address or place.
- Enter a county, city, or address you feel comfortable sharing.
- Click search
- On the left hand side of the screen is a list of options, click environmental justice indexes.
- Select any of the options listed.
The closer to red the color the higher the pollution is in that area. Please describe what you see. Were you aware of this issue prior to this class? What health conditions does this pollutant contribute to?
Option 2:Please visit the WalkscoreLinks to an external site. tool.
- Enter a county, city, or address you feel comfortable sharing.
- Click search
- On the left hand side of the screen there is a list of scores: Walk,. Transit, & Bike Score
- Below the walkscore is a brief description about this location.
Walkability and bike-ability in a community has been tied to lower levels of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. A transition to more mixed use city planning, which would increase population density and reduce reliance on single occupancy vehicles has been one part of the puzzle to addressing the epidemic of chronic diseases associated with sedentary lifestyles. Share what you have found out about your selected community. How do the weekly readings align or not align with what you are observing?
