journal module 6
Indiana State University AFRI 312 The African Diaspora Weekly Journal Post – module 6 3 pts Week #6 – This should be completed last, after you have finished the other assignments in the module. Otherwise you will not do as well on this journal assignment. Due Date: Monday 11:59 EST Learning Objectives With the help of this week’s tasks, you should be able to identify and analyze diverse processes and events that led to the eventual and complete freedom of slaves. This is aligned with course level objective #2 & #3 which state that: At the end of this course you should be able to… • explain common cultural patterns, historical events and concerns that have been relevant to descendants in the Afro-Atlantic world. • compare and contrast regional circumstances, and the responses people made during and after the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Assignment (In Brief) For this assignment you will create a table with 2 world regions down the left column and 4 events that led to end of slavery across the top row. From there you can organize for yourself in a simple way which events led to the end of slavery in each region. The 4 major events will be your choice. These categories can serve as a simple compare and contrast process with your two world regions for your mRA assignment. [Your Name] World Region [Topic heading 1] [Topic heading 2] [Topic heading 3] [Topic heading 4] Internal Pressures of the locale, regional events Significant External Pressure World events One of the first steps will be to summarize general categories of events that helped slavery end in the various regions of the New World. These can be seen as the BIG categories that will be used for you analysis later. 1 Then, when ready you will list your chosen world regions down the left side and then draft BIG categories for the top of your table to analyze which world regions had certain characteristics for achieving emancipation. This will depend on the regions you chose. Another step in the analysis will be to determine which events mostly influenced the local domain [internal pressures on slavery], and which events also carried a global impact on other slave holding areas in the world. A table like this can help you see the similarities and differences between slave holding societies all throughout the new world, and it should help you to write your compare and contrast paper. Complete the tasks as explained in this document. Be sure to create your table in a Microsoft word document, then label and save your document where you can find it later. Submit your table on the weekly journal link. Directions (Detailed) Step 1. Develop Large Categories [types of actions] Based on your list of examples from the Emancipation Story activity and your summary from the powerpoints, create a working inventory of the types of actions related to the freeing of slaves. I also suggest you choose two that interest you the most for comparison. This will require that you step back, and think about the various examples in a more general way in order to devise large general categories from some of those specific examples you are more familiar with. THINK from small specific examples and zooming out to get a bird’s eye view to create BIG ideas from all of that. For example, actual events or specific circumstances, like the Haitian Revolution in Saint Domingue, resemble events in other places similar enough to also be grouped together with other rebellions that occurred all over the African diaspora. The Muslim Uprising in Brazil and/or the Nat Turner Rebellion in the U.S. were all slave rebellions and were some of the earliest attempts to end slavery by “rebels” in the slave and free black populations. Each of these events are different in many ways, this is true… but they are similar enough to label it in general terms such as: “Rebellions, Insurrections and Uprisings” or merely, “Slave Rebellions”. (either would be fine). This is a BIG general category that can represent these kinds of events. Now it’s your turn, From the list of examples you discovered in your reading, and that of your classmates, create 4 distinct but concise topic headings (general categories) (no more than 3 or 4 words per 2 heading) that summarizes common, but different steps that took place before all slaves were free. Then, add a brief acronym to represent each topic category heading you just created. For the topic heading, “Slave Rebellions” it could be abbreviated as: (SR). You are free to develop your own topic headings and acronyms. Step 2. Create a Table [See Example 1:] Create a table in a word document that has 7 columns and 2 rows. You may copy and paste the table from above. In the first top left corner cell write “World Region”. In the two cells below [the descending column on the left hand side], write two world areas in the new world that had slaves (your choice, best to use the areas you plan to write about in your mRA outline). Write the four topic headings you constructed (one heading per cell) in the top row as shown in Example 1. In the last two remaining cells on the top, write Internal Pressure in one cell, and Significant External pressure in the last right hand corner cell. These last two cells will help you examine what degree of influence those events and/or processes had on emancipation. Possible world regions to choose from are: Brazil, Cuba, Santo Domingo (The Dominican Republic), Saint Dominique (Haiti), Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, The United States. Choose only 2 for the table. Example 1: (you may choose any World Region as long as they were involved in world events during the Trans-Atlantic Slave era. It would be good to pick the ones you want to focus on for your mRA asignment). World Region [Topic heading 1] [Topic heading 2] [Topic heading 3] [Topic heading 4] Internal Pressure Significant External Pressure Saint Dominque (Haiti) Jamaica Step 3. For each world region you list, move across the table and place an X under any topic that matches events or processes that you or your classmates discovered that actually took place in 3 that region. You are allowed to return to your textbook readings, the index at the back of your book or articles in the mRA Materials module in canvas. For example, if I wrote “Rebellions” as one of my topic headings at the top, I would mark any territory in my table that had slave rebellions. If there were no significant reports of rebellions, then I would leave it blank. According to the textbook (by Patrick Manning), he states that Saint Dominque and Jamaica both had slave rebellions. Therefore I would place an X for 2 regions under the Rebellion category. See example 2. Example 2: World Region Haiti Jamaica Slave Rebellions (SR) X X [Topic heading 2] [Topic heading 3] [Topic heading 4] Internal pressure Significant External pressure Note: Some world regions may have more than one step in the liberation process, and therefore they can have an X under more than one of your topic headings. Everything depends on the topic headings you create, and the world regions you choose to place in your table. Also consider alternative words that can mean the same thing as your heading, such as Rebellions could also be referred to as Insurrections, uprisings, armed conflicts, etc. Step 4. Next try to decide if each event or process had primarily an Internal Pressure effect on the continuation, or elimination of slavery or if it also went beyond the boundaries to create an External Pressure on the institution of slavery in general all over the world. Internal pressure on slavery means that it happened locally and its influence was to eliminate or continue the practice in that particular slave colony or nation. External pressure means that it could have happened anywhere but had a strong impact on many other world regions and not just in the place it originated. For example: The Haitian Revolution made a tremendous impact globally, to the point of altering and changing various slave holding practices and attitudes in other regions. Therefore, it seems accurate to choose both Internal and External for the domains of influence from the Haitian Revolution. Use the acronym associated with your topic heading to identify for yourself if the action put pressure on slavery either internally, externally or both. 4 Example 3: World Region Slave [Topic [Topic [Topic Internal Significant Rebellions heading 2] heading 3] heading 4] pressure External (SR) pressure Haiti X (SR) (SR) Jamaica X (SR) Step 5. Continue the same process with your other three topic headings. Model your table and description as shown in the example below. Step 6. File and save your table in Microsoft word. Submit your table as your journal posting. Models, samples [Your Name] COMPLETED INVENTORY TABLE (please create your own table based on this model) I made this table to compare Haiti and Jamaica and I chose 4 types of actions that took place in the Emancipation Story. You can come up with different ones or similar ones, and make sure you use your own regions of choice as well. World Region Slave Rebellions (SR) Haiti X Jamaica X Progression of Slave / labor laws (SLL) Blacks in the military (BIM) Anti-slavery societiesAbolitionists (ABOL) X X X X Include if this was an Internal pressure (SR), (BIM) (SR), (ABOL), (SLL), (BIM) Include if Significant External pressure, as well (SR), (BIM) (ABOL) Step 7. How to Submit your post on the weekly journal page Merely click on the link to the journal page in the assignment folder, and copy and paste your table there. Remember do not put it in any other submission page than the one reserved for the journal. 5
