WST A03 2024 Feminist Thought and Theory Midterm Exam (30%) Instruction: 1. What would liberal feminists, radical feminists, socialist and Marxist feminists (and intersectional feminists) say about women’s unwaged and devalued work? (tips: you may choose at least one liberal feminist, one radical, intersectional feminist, and one Marxist/socialist feminist and describe how they would each address the topic of women’s unwaged and devalued work. How would each theorist support their arguments? Be specific and use evidence from the text in your response. Avoid using broad claims such as “transnational feminists would think…” Be specific, for example, “according to the name of the author, …” 2 Option 2: on SEX You walk into a coffee shop and run into Gayle Rubin. She invites you to sit at her table with Catherine MacKinnon, Betty Friedan, Frederic Engels and Juno Mac(the TedTalk speaker on sex work we didn’t have time to cover in the lectures, but check out this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJRBx0JjM_M). They are having a discussion on BDSM/kinky pornography. What would each of them say about the problems, potentials or promises of consuming and producing BDSM/kinky pornography? Please use at least 3 of the abovementioned theorists to compose your answer. Tips: brainstorm the following questions might be helpful: Relations between porn and sexual violence; what would the “charmed circle” and the domino theory of sexual peril tell us about stigmatization and disciplining sexuality; how to legislate and regulate of sex work; what do sex workers think of their work; power relations in BDSM; impact on both women and men; waged labor and exploitation in porn industry; agency in producing and consuming porn; sex education; and so on. Option 3: on TOXIC MASCULINITY Watch these two videos “Gillette tackles toxic masculinity in new ad” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJzdSch3hAE ) and “Gillette’s ‘We believe: the best men can be’ razors commercial takes on toxic masculinity” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYaY2Kb_PKI), use theories and critiques we have learned so far (liberal, radical, and socialist feminisms and so on) to analyze how this ads challenges and uphold toxic masculinity Tips: remember we analyzed the movie Barbie in class? I started with the narrative, character design and development, the plots, etc., and picked some scenes and three aspects? I also asked you to think about how the film challenges and reinforce neoliberal ideas? Although you don’t need to write a full-on essay analyzing the video clips for this question, it could be helpful to draw from the methods we used in analyzing Barbie. You know how to use the authors and theorists we’ve engaged with to directly strengthen and support your points. You can identify and discuss the broader implications and consequences of this conversation. Attention to Writing You can structure and organize your thoughts in a way that highlights your brilliance, rather than confuses your reader.
