Assignment Overview In today’s workplace, communication is frequent and typically involves writing. Keeping this in mind, most careers require writing, be it an email, incident report, medical chart, price estimate, job description, or a resume and cover letter required to apply for a job. It is critical to have confidence in your written communication skills and your ability to convey a clear message with an appropriate level of detail in any workplace environment. In working with others, it is also important to understand what will be expected of you, based on what your colleagues share with you in their written messages. This assignment is also an opportunity to consider the intended audience. For this scenario, the audience would be a potential employer. It is important to be mindful of personal information shared and ensure you are focusing on your strengths. In this course, we started to build a toolbox of best practices in written workplace communications. Specifically, we reviewed a variety of methods and strategies for conveying a message with clarity as it relates to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and mechanics. Writing using grammatically correct sentences, proper punctuation, and correct spelling and mechanics will convey your message to your audience in the clearest form possible. Directions In this assignment, you will demonstrate your ability to write with proper grammar and mechanics, by responding to a workplace scenario in writing. While your grade on this assignment is most heavily weighted on grammar and mechanics, your ability to organize your thoughts and include detailed, relevant examples, descriptions, and explanations will also be a factor when determining your overall grade on this writing assignment. 1. Below are 3 writing prompts to choose from when completing this assignment. Read each prompt carefully and then choose 1 to respond to. 2. Address the prompt’s question in a well-organized, multi-paragraph format. 3. Include detailed explanations to support your answer. 4. Review your response for professional language and tone. 5. Organize your response into 2-3 paragraphs. 6. Ensure your response is approximately 550 words in length. 7. Submit your scenario response as a Word Document. NOTE: outside sources are NOT required for this assignment. However, if you choose to use one, you must cite it using APA style. Please see the “Student Resources” tab in Blackboard for the B&SC APA Style Guide. After you complete this assignment, you will submit it for instructor review and feedback. Once you receive your feedback on the assignment you will take the feedback and revise your response and re-submit the assignment again in Week 6. In Week 6, you will write a reflection that details your experience with the writing and revision process of this assignment. Scenario and Prompts You are completing an application for a management position in your field. The application asks you to respond to 1 of these prompts in detail: 1: Describe a time when your responsibilities became overwhelming. Explain what you did to get back on track. How will you prevent getting overloaded in the future? Show how this situation helped you grow as a person. 2: Write about a time when a project or situation at work did not go as expected, and what steps you took to get it back on track. Explain what you did well in this situation. Describe what you could have done differently. Then show how this experience has helped prepare you for a management position. 3: Describe a time when you took initiative without being asked. Describe the project or situation, and why you chose to act without guidance. What were the results? What does this situation show about your leadership style? Level 5 53–56 points Few and/or relatively minor errors in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling that do not impact the clarity of the message. Level 4 48-52 points Several errors in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling that do not impact the clarity of the message.
