PEER POST # 1
When looking at the security of IoT devices, consumers and manufacturers both need to look at the security of the devices to ensure they are safe to use. On the consumer end, the end users would need to ensure that there home network is as secure as can be. They should make sure that the network is secure. This can be done by changing the default password on the router to start. Also ensure that the router is set whatever it’s most secure encryption standard whether it is WPA2 or if newer that it is WPA3. From there they should turn off broadcasting their SSID and make a strong password for their network. With knowledge they can also reduce the range of the signal to prevent people from outside their home/area being able to access the signal. When all of these are combined you are have a relatively secure network but obviously nothing is perfect.
On the manufacturers end, they need to ensure that the device is secure and difficult to compromise. Often these devices do not have tough security and are able to be compromised. Along with this once a device has been known to be able to be compromised, the manufacturer should be required to immediately find a way to patch the issue and users should be informed. Obviously the issue arises in that how will the patch be deployed? Will there need to be user interaction or if the device is on the network will it automatically be deployed? With the increase in smart appliances these are question that need to be answered. Regardless of how it will be deployed, communication needs to be sent so consumers are aware of the problem. Users at that point will have the option to remove the device from the network temporarily or accept the risk.
PEER POST # 2
IoT devices like Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortana, or Google’s Echo Dot are super helpful devices that are used every day by millions of people around the world. Depending on where you are in the world, there are different laws and guidelines that must be followed to preserve user privacy. In America, there are not as many or as strict laws and guidelines on user privacy as there are in Europe. A guideline that is in place to help with user cybersecurity is known as the CIA triad, although its name sounds like the three letter American government entity, it is not related to them. The components of the CIA triad are: confidentiality, which is related to user privacy in regards to how security measures are created in order to keep sensitive user information from falling into the wrong hands; integrity which determines how trustworthy or accurate data is over its lifecycle and that the data can’t be changed when going from one user to another and not altered by random users; availability determines how users are to maintain their infrastructure so that all information is accessible for all parties involved and that hardware is being maintained.
In my opinion, I think that security for IoT devices should be a dual responsibility between the user and the manufacturer. Manufacturers should ensure that their devices can update their firewalls as needed, maintain user data security to prevent data leaks, and that there are no unauthorized users accessing that data that is collected. Users that purchase these devices need to be vigilant, because if the user allows themselves to be a sitting duck and only rely on the manufacturing companies to keep their information secure, then the users are not being responsible with their own information. For the consumers, I recommend they use different home networks for their IoT devices and invest in their own security measures like Norton Security to monitor that network. The manufacturers need to make sure that there are updates being sent out to those devices to maintain a current firewall, software, and any bug fixes necessary as needed.
