Religion Question
RESEARCH PAPER INSTRUCTIONS LENGTH OF PAPER: a 5- to 8-page research paper The paper must be formatted as listed below: – Typed. – Double – spaced. You should make sure that your word processing program is set for doublespacing. You should not use hard returns at the end of each line. o Do not use a hard return at the end of a paragraph, which would result in quadruple-spacing between paragraphs. o If you include any subtitles in your paper, they should be centered in the page, double-spaced after the preceding paragraph, and double-spaced before the next paragraph. (Do not overdo subtitles. Use them strategically. They should not be used merely to extend the length of your paper.) o The exceptions to double-spacing are block quotes of five lines or longer in the body of the paper, footnotes, and the individual entries of the bibliography page. Both should be single-spaced. • Times New Roman font. • 12-point font size. Footnotes, however, should be in 10-point font. • 1-inch margins on all four sides of the page. • Use the Align Left alignment. Do not use block justification. • Indent each paragraph using the 0.5” default setting. • Page numbers should be centered at the bottom of each page, beginning on page 1. These should be added by using the Insert Page Number function in your word processing program. Do not type the page number yourself at the bottom of the page. Doing so will cause the bottom margin to exceed the 1-inch requirement. • You do not need a title page or cover sheet. Your name should be typed on the top left line of the first page only at the one-inch margin. It should not be inserted as a header in your paper. o On page 1, the title of your paper should be double-spaced below your name, centered on the page. o On page 1, the content of your paper should begin on the left margin doublespaced below the title. Citations should be entered as footnotes using Turabian style. Do not use endnotes or parenthetical citations (except that you can use parenthetical citations for scripture citations). Your footnotes should be single-spaced in a 10-point font. You can find help on Turabian citation styles and how to insert footnotes in your paper at the DBU University Writing Center at www.dbu.edu/writing-center. At the end of the paper, include a Bibliography page, using Turabian style. This page should list all of the research sources you cited in your paper. This page does not count as part of the 5to 8-page requirement for the paper. You can find help on creating a bibliography using Turabian style at the DBU University Writing Center at www.dbu.edu/writing-center. There are some common mistakes made when footnoting and preparing a bibliography. Let me mention a few: • Footnote style is similar but different from bibliography style. Be sure to note the differences in the Writing Center packet’s examples of citations beginning on page 5. • Footnotes are indented on the first line; bibliographies are indented on the second line. • Footnotes list the author’s name as First Name Last Name; bibliographies list the author’s name as Last Name, First Name. • Footnotes separate the information by commas and parentheses; bibliographies separate the information by periods. • Footnotes include the page number of your citation; bibliographies do not include page numbers (except for a journal article, which shows the full range of pages covered by the article). • Footnotes should be single-spaced, including between footnotes. The individual entries in bibliographies are also single-spaced but are double-spaced between separate entries. • Footnotes should be in 10-point font; bibliographies should be in 12-point font. RESEARCH SOURCES research paper must include at least 3 of the following approved sources that are cited in the paper. Using less than three approved sources will reduce the grade on the paper by up to 6 points (2 points for each approved source less than three not used). The following are approved sources: • Approved Commentaries o Baker Commentary on the Old Testament: Wisdom and Psalms (BCOTWP) o The Bible Speaks Today (BST) o Broadman Bible Commentary o Constable’s Bible Study Notes, https://planobiblechapel.org/constable-notes available online at o Expositor’s Bible Commentary (EBC) o Interpretation Bible Commentary (IBC) o New American Commentary (NAC) o New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT) o The Old Testament Library (OTL) o Tyndale Old Testament Commentary (TOTC) o NIV Application Commentary (NIVAC) o Word Biblical Commentary (WBC) • Approved Books o Donald Berry, An Introduction to Wisdom and Poetry of the Old Testament o Tremper Longman III & Raymond Dillard, An Introduction to the Old Testament o Daniel Estes, Handbook on the Wisdom Books and Psalms o Andrew Hill & John Walton, A Survey of the Old Testament o Eugene Merrill, An Historical Survey of the Old Testament You may use other sources in your paper, but at least three of your sources must be from this approved list. Be careful, however, to use professional, legitimate sources. This caution is especially true regarding internet sources. As you do your research, remember that you have access to the JSTOR and EBSCO databases on the DBU Library website at https://www.dbu.edu/library. You can find excellent journal articles and online books through these sites. RESEARCH PAPER TOPICS: The ways of the sluggard (or lazy person) Explanation: Discuss what the book of Proverbs teaches on one of these topics by using the same approach Estes does in his textbook for the topics he discussed. Follow the three-step process Estes describes on pages 223-224 of the textbook to address the topic: (1) identify the sayings in Proverbs pertaining to the topic; (2) study the meaning of each selected verse using lexical, grammatical, and literary analyses along with the insight of commentators; then (3) synthesize the verses selected into major categories of the topic to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. After following these steps, present your interpretation of the teaching of Proverbs on your chosen topic.
