Task: Choosing ONE of the topics below, you are required to write a short report in relation to the methods used to research the topic: • • • Gender Inequality Miscommunication in Cross-Cultural Discussions Social Rules This aim of the report is for it to be used towards a larger study on the selected topic; for example, as a part of the research chapter in a dissertation at university. Your task is to give a brief overview of the topic area and look at the research methods used to study this area. You should then select one particular method and evaluate its strengths and limitations against other methods used. Specifically, you have to evaluate its: • • • • • Validity Practicality Insight Bias Whether or not the question of Ethics has been considered In your report you must demonstrate the understanding and application of the theory you have learned in the module so far – especially with reference to gender, language, prejudice, and media – and you should follow the structure outlined below. Structure: Your report should be divided into 4-5 sections. Section 1: Introduction (approximately 250 words) Briefly outline the topic in question, the main research done in the field (including the research methods used) Sections 2-4: Analysis (approximately 1000 words) Compare and analyse the methods used to research the topic area Select and evaluate one method for its strengths while highlighting its limitations and weaknesses within the context of the topic (use concepts studied on the module, such as those covered in the sections on gender, language, prejudice, media, etc; use citations to sources/studies throughout) Section 5: Conclusion (approximately 200 words) Briefly summarise the main points of your report References: Reference list (not included in the word count) – A minimum of 6 sources should be referred to Theory and/or task resources required for the assessment: You must conduct secondary research for this assessment finding relevant sources independently, in addition to the resources listed in your module textbook. All theory necessary for this assignment are covered in Theme 3-10 sessions: Language and Culture; Non-Verbal Communication; Values in Business and Society; Culture and Gender; Culture and Family; Prejudice and Stereotypes; Digital Culture and New Media; Culture, Identity and Research Methods. Referencing style: You should refer to a minimum of 6 relevant sources for your report. Please refer to your module textbook for a list of useful resources. You must include a Harvard style reference list at the end of your report relating all your in-text citations. Expected word count: You are expected to write 1500 words (+/- 10%, references not included), following the specific structure outlined above. Assessments submitted after the submission deadline may incur penalties or may not be accepted. The assessment will be marked using the following four marking criteria: Content and Coverage (35%) At least 6 appropriate sources are selected to demonstrate knowledge of the study of an area and the research methods used. The student demonstrates clear knowledge of the key areas of methodology studies: validity, practicality, insight, bias, and ethics. There is breadth of coverage across several issues; all of which are explored in some depth. Analysis (40%) Points made throughout the overall analysis are relevant and insightful. Research methods are analysed well, drawing out their strengths, weaknesses and limitations. The opinion given on the RM most closely analysed is well informed and conclusions are reasonable. Academic Integrity (15%) Correct use of paraphrase, citations, quotes and references; accurate representation of data and facts. Language and presentation (10%) The report is well organised, coherent and with good use of language. You will receive a % mark in each of these categories and your overall mark will be calculated as the weighted average of the four. The overall mark will be a percentage (0-100%).
