The following is a simulation from the university of Colorado. They have simulations about most things science, including biology, geology, math, physics, and chemistry. If you ever want to play around with some simulations, go check out PhETLinks to an external site..

These simulation assignments are going to be fairly brief, but I hope they make you think and process the physics at hand a little. If you ever have trouble running these simulations or understanding them or my instructions, please feel free to message me via canvas or send me an email.
Submissions for these “lab” or simulation assignments will be file uploads. You can either write out your answers by hand, snap a picture with your phone and upload that (note: I will not accept *.HEIC or *.HEIF images from iphones. Convert into any standard picture format please!) or you can type out your answers and upload a word or pdf file.
Select the “Intro” option.
Turn on both the “Grid” and “Speed” options.
Optionally, select “Slow Motion” to make things easier to see.
Pick up the skater, and drop her from the 2m line on to the track.
To be clear, place her on the track, starting at a height of 2m.
She should be skating back and forth continuously.
Question 1: What is her maximum speed? Assume that every mark on the speed dial is worth 1 m/s starting from 0m/s.
Question 2: Where is she located on the track when she is at her maximum speed?
Question 3: What is her minimum speed? Again, assume that every mark on the speed dial is worth 1 m/s.
Question 4: Where is she located on the track when she is at her minimum speed?
Pick up the skater again, and this time drop her from the 2m line not on the track.
Just drop her next to track and watch the speed dial.
Question 5: What is her maximum speed in this case?
Feel free to try as many attempts as needed.
- Question 6: Using your observations thus far, can you come up with a hypothesis regarding the skater’s motion on and off the track? What is your hypothesis?
- Question 7: Test your hypothesis within the simulation if possible and report your results here. If your hypothesis cannot be tested within the simulation, explain why here.
Pick up the skater and drop her from the 4m line on to the track.
- Question 8: What is her new maximum speed?
- Question 9: Using your observations of her maximum speed in question 1 and question 8, can you come up with a hypothesis regarding the skaters maximum speed relative to her starting height? What is your hypothesis?
Question 10: Test your hypothesis within the simulation if possible and report your results here. If your hypothesis cannot be tested within the simulation, explain why here.
