IN AN ESSAY FORMAT, ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING:
1) Provide a summary of the individual’s experiences with pregnancy and conception. Identify the risk and protective factors related to conception, perinatal care, pregnancy, and childbirth experiences.
-I spoke with a good friend of mine who is an African American female who conceived when she was 19 years old. Gave birth to a little girl but had to undergo emergency surgery because she was losing too much blood during delivery. She did receive prenatal care but the doctor missed she was anemic causing complications during childbirth and almost causing her to lose her life. She did not have any abnormal complications during her pregnancy and was unaware she had anemia. She had to undergo emergency C-section and a partial hysterectomy and was then put into an induced coma for nearly a week. She and the baby needed 3 blood transfusions and eventually after about 3 weeks they both recovered and were later discharged from the hospital. After this traumatic event she is now not able to conceive although she wants more children. This has had a major impact on her life. Her daughter is a teenager now and has no medical problems.

A case formulation hypothesizes the psychological mechanisms that cause and maintain an individual’s symptoms and problems. Hypotheses are generated about the origins and causes of a patient’s symptoms. The most common and clinically practical way to formulate is through the biopsychosocial approach, first described in 1980 by George Engel.
