Social and Cultural Influences2 Introduction There are numerous influences that shape the identity of each individual.In a melting pot like the United States of America, there are people from different ethnicities and cultures that grow up in a variety of environments.Whether we recognize it or not, these factors have an impact on our behavior and the choices that we make.Culture is often synonymous but not always in reference to those with the same ethnicity (Unger, & Schwartz, 2012).While the definition of culture is debated, one definition can be “a shared set of ideas and beliefs held by a group of people” (Unger, & Schwartz, 2012).From infancy our minds are molded by the people and environment around us.My personal history of growing up as a second-generation Korean immigrant in a predominantly Caucasian community has influenced my identity and my personality today.My background, education, community and family have all influenced my choices in becoming a nurse practitioner. Cultural Influences Culture can be a way of life that is shared by family and the community around a person (Watt et al., 2016).In order to become a better provider it is important to be self-aware of my own cultural identification.My parents had immigrated to America in the 1980’s from South Korea and I grew up in a small southern New Jersey suburb that was predominantly Caucasian.I was one of the three Asian students in my whole entire grade and there were less than 10 Asian students in the elementary school overall.While I never felt ostracized due to my appearance I was always aware that I was different from other classmates.I did not always have a lot of friends around me and was alienated at times but it allowed me to develop myself at a younger age.This time period in my life has influenced the way I treat others around me now.I try to
