Facilitating Social Development and Managing Challenging Behaviors
Facilitating Social Development and Managing Challenging BehaviorsRemember: Everyone in the classroom has a story that leads to misbehavior or defiance. 9 times out of 10, the story behind the misbehavior won’t make you angry. It will break your heart. ~ Annette BreauxThis week, we will continue our study on the importance of children, birth to 8 years of age, being socially competent and emotionally healthy. Although development is somewhat predictable, we know children have great variability. Many of these differences occur because of variations in genetics (nature) and environment (nurture). Unfortunately, we can never know which of our students are living in or have experienced traumatic events due to emotional or physical abuse and/or neglect, divorce, the death of a family member, poverty, and homelessness. Social and emotional skills are the most difficult to assess as they require ongoing data collection through observation over time. When we use data-driven, trauma-informed, and positive guidance strategies with all students, we ensure that the students who can’t ask for support are still getting it. Children’s acquisition of appropriate social skills depends, to a significant degree, on how adults interact with them. As Robert Fulghum (1990), in an essay, All I Really Ever Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, places the major responsibility of early childhood educators to model, provide, and facilitate positive social opportunities through the use of play, to enhance and develop children’s overall social and emotional skills they need to succeed in life. Objectives:
Identify behavior problems common to early childhood settings and explain the role of an early childhood educator in preventing and reducing these behaviors. (NAEYC Standards:1a,1b,1c,4a,4b,4c,4d,5c,6d)
- Examine and describe current methods and techniques in assessing social development and creating developmentally appropriate behavior management practices to structure and support peer interactions through effective play facilitation. (NAEYC Standards: 1a,1b,1c,2b,3a,3b,,3c,4a,4c,5c)

Unit 5 DB: Possible Underlying Causes of BehaviorWhen you first hear possible underlying causes of behavior, what comes to mind? Based on readings and discussions on social development, we have come to understand we must take into account possible reasons for undesirable behaviors and provide positive guidance strategies to address these behaviors. Some of the most common underlying causes of behavior may include frustration, misunderstanding expectations, boredom, discouragement, desire for recognition, attention, and rebellion.Reflect and describe one of your own personal and/or professional experiences regarding inappropriate behavior. You may describe an experience when you were a child displaying inappropriate behavior or when you were an adult (teacher or parent), providing the intervention to shape the child’s inappropriate behavior.
- Describe the situation.
Identify the possible underlying cause(s) of the behavior.
Describe in detail the intervention provided by the adult.
