Major Assignment | Annotated Bibliography Annotated Bibliography Draft 1 and Revision 1 Sources to support the Short Research Writing: Advice Column to Freshman Students This assignment is part of a larger sequence of assignments. Here is some information about the sequence of annotated bibliography assignments. We are starting with draft 1 now. Later in the semester you will revise this draft. Draft 1 and Revison 1 present sources you will use in your Short Researched Writing (SRW) assignment. Later in the semester, you will write Draft 2 of your Annotated Bibliography in which you present sources to support our Extended Research Writing (ERW) and then a revision of that second draft. Process You will submit a draft and a revision of this assignment. Both the draft and revision will be graded (and affect your overall grade as Major Assignments). Purpose: The goal of this assignment is to introduce you to research strategies and skills and to prepare you for the reading you will be doing to complete your researched article assignments in this class and in future courses across the curriculum. Audience: There are three audiences for this assignment: 1) you as the writer who will learn a specific skill for thinking about texts, their structure, and their relevance to a question; 2) other Mason first-year students; 3) your instructors who will use this as an opportunity to assess how you are reading sources, if you are understanding the central components of the text you are reading, and if you are able to communicate the important components in a clear and concise way. Task: • Think about aspects of learning that are interesting to you. To help you, consider our class readings, activities, and discussion. And, look at our course infographic that provides an overview of some different dimensions of learning (types of learning, challenges to learning, strategies for maximizing learning). Think about which dimension of learning (on the ENGH 100 | Spring 2024 1 Major Assignment | Annotated Bibliography infographic or not) you are interested in and have had some (good or bad) experiences with. • From this reflection, identify a main thread from your own experience that you think would be interesting or relevant to other first-year students. Write out several curiosity questions in your Project Plan Part 1. Remember that it should be interesting and relevant to you! • Use the Mason library databases, Proquest Central or Academic Search Complete, to locate two popular sources that help you understand your area of interest. You can only use magazine articles or Trade Journals for this assignment. • Summarize and analyze those two sources using the guidelines below. Annotated Bibliography Draft 1 Content: Formatting and Delivery: Include the following in a Word document on OneDrive. Include your name and class information at the top, followed by your title (curiosity question) and your two annotated bibliography entries in alphabetical order. Formatting samples are available on Blackboard. Title: Please include one curiosity question as the title of your annotated bibliography. This is the question that you used to locate your two sources. This means that the two sources you discuss help you to provide answers to your question. An APA style annotated bibliography entry for each source: 1) Reference citation: a complete and accurate reference for the source following APA citation style and using a hanging indent 2) Annotation: Note that you will need to use APA in-text citations in your annotation. a. Which specific idea from the source do you think other first-year students would find interesting or helpful and why? • Explain how you will use this source in your Short Research Writing.
