Get it written →When designing an intervention, identifying and using a theoretical model can help guide your understanding of the problem, the nature of the intervention and/or its components, and the mechanisms underlying the potential improvements in outcomes.
This week’s assignment is to connect your proposed intervention with a theoretical model. There are 3 parts to this assignment.
Part 1: Using your literature review as a reference along with any additional searches, create a one page summary that answers the following questions (use questions as subheadings):
What theories have been used in prior research?
Angelina:
- Bernice: In prior intervention research to increase Colorectal Cancer screening the theory used by Fernández et al (2015) was the Integrated Behavior Model (IBM). This theory was used throughout their intervention mapping to understand the psychological factors to acting out the preferred behavior.
Diana:
Guadalupe:
Which concepts/constructs from those theories showed promise for changing outcomes?
Angelina:
Bernice: The top three constructs from the Integrated Behavioral Model that showed promise for changing outcomes were attitude, perceived norms and personal agency. The intervention conducted by Fernández et al (2015) to increase screening through health-lay workers provided one-on-one educational information with the aim to address these three main constructs (i.e., attitudes, perceived norms and personal agency) to encourage the new behavior.
- Diana:
Guadalupe:
To what extent has previous research explored the impact of theory on your chosen health issue?
What theoretical model will your group use to guide your intervention? Why?
The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) suggests the intention to carry out a behavior is determined by three factors: attitudes, subjective norms and perceived control (Glanz et al., 2015). The TPB is applicable to volitional behaviors, in our case, Colorectal Cancer is a volitional behavior, TPB is designed to predict behaviors that individuals have control over (Glanz et al., 2015).
