UCB Enhancing Ethical Practices in Nikes Supply Chain discussion
Instruction: Please Make sure you scroll through everything, I posted the students discussions too. This forum discusses: Nike Global Sourcing (7) (PDF) Global Ethical Sourcing: The Case of Nike (researchgate.net) Based on the assigned readings, what could Nike have done differently to deal with the problems mentioned in the article to run their business (service (Nike stores) and manufacturing) in a lean way? What lessons did you learn from Nike case? Discuss Sustainability in luxury brands (EX: Chanel, Burberry, Luis Vuitton, etc.) feel free to look for outside material, companies’ websites, etc. to support your analysis. How can sustainability be achieved in hotels? Provide examples. Do you think sustainability in services is different from manufacturing? Why? Your response will be publicly available to the class. One original meaningful response (not less than 300 words) and two replies to two of your peers (each response is not less than 200 words). Here are the student’s discussions that you can respond to: Nike’s discussion: Bilal post; Nike could have avoided many of its ethical problems with sweatshops and mistreating workers if it used lean ways of working early on. Lean ways focus on cutting out waste while respecting workers. This works just as well for outside factories as inside ones. By making the production process more efficient the right way, Nike may have saved money without doing wrong. One lesson I learned from this nike case is top management commitment and accountability are critical for making major positive changes to business practices. If leaders deny responsibility or fail to enact real reforms, public trust will continue eroding At first, Nike’s top leaders denied responsibility for the bad conditions at the factories making their products. But public upset eventually forced Nike’s CEO to promise major changes. He said they would make accountability and listening to customer values a priority. This commitment from the top was vital for Nike to reform. Without executives on board, the big reforms needed might not have happened. Nike realized that being transparent and having independent audits is crucial to regain trust after a scandal. Its first audit by a politician backfired because it seemed misleading. Regular monitoring by accredited outside groups helped show Nike’s efforts to improve factories were real, not just for show. For luxury fashion brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton, there’s natural tension between exceptional quality/exclusivity and reducing social/environmental impacts. But high-end shoppers increasingly factor ethics and responsibility into purchases. So luxury brands have strong money reasons to keep improving sustainability through responsible sourcing, less production/retail waste, and innovations to make classic products greener. Similarly, sustainability is crucial for hotels to cut unnecessary waste without lowering service quality. Top hotel chains do this by increasing energy/water efficiency, partnering with eco-conscious vendors, minimizing non-recyclable waste, and pursuing LEED green building certification. So while industries differ, applying lean ways to cut waste responsibly is key across sectors. Discussion reponses 2 Amazon supply chain: Hannah’s post; he video about Amazon highlights various elements that are all important to success, such as customer satisfaction, innovation, and lean manufacturing, but one element that ultimately ties everything together is its supply chain. This matters because without it, none of the other elements would function, preventing Amazon from even surviving. To further demonstrate the value of having a strong supply chain, it’s crucial to examine the other elements. In the talk, the point about customer obsession was brought up numerous times, being mentioned as “the most important thing about Amazon is this: we start with the customer and always work backwards” (2:40) and furthermore, that the “goal was to have the Earth’s most customer-centric company”. As additional context from the dialogue in the video, it was specified that customers look for convenience, wide selection, and low prices. Amazon’s supply chain comes into play precisely in these areas in order to provide for customers by coordinating between borders, languages, different time zones, and many other factors. Therefore, this shows how, without a sound supply chain, Amazon’s survival would be threatened. Moving forwards, “[Amazon] cares so much about convenience, which the supply chain helps with” (33:15). The reason why is because convenience is what gives people back time, which is an additional way the supply chain supports customers. The importance of this goes further. As mentioned, being customer-centric is a massive priority for the company and is what has driven their success, and because having convenience helps them help the customer, the way the supply chain helps operate convenience builds upon Amazon’s custom-based philosophy. Furthermore, Amazon views itself as a manufacturing company. To them, being lean and efficient is an element they value. In connection to this, Amazon’s speaker spoke about how “supply chain is a key differentiator” because it “allows [them] to speed things up and deliver” (12:40). This is crucial because customers love a good, speedy delivery, and the supply chain is giving it to them. Ultimately, the supply chain in Amazon is a model for why it’s important for any company. Without it, there wouldn’t be products for anyone.
