TESU Psychology History And Systems of Psych Behavior Change Discussion
In Discussion Forum 8, post your response to the following reflection question. Reply to at least two classmates’ responses by the date indicated in the Course Calendar. [MO 4.2]
- If you are like everyone else on Earth, you can probably think of something that you would like to change about your behavior. Identify a new habit that you would like to build, or perhaps a mistake that you would like to stop making. How would you apply behavioral principles to make this change? Use behavioral terms in your explanation. Is there any aspect of your change that would NOT connect to a behavioral concept?
- In your replies to your classmates, let them know if you have ever wanted to make a similar change to the one they identified. Has their idea inspired you to apply concepts of behaviorism in a similar way in your own life?
- ****IMPORTANT INFO: A behavior that I’d like to change is my communication. I want to be able to communicate more affectively when expressing my needs to my family, friends, and coworkers.

“I would like to change my characteristic of yelling when parenting my children or when something is just not going right. A new habit i want to build is being more patient and becoming a better communicator. Some behavioral principles i will apply include: Identifying the function of the behavior, asking myself how do i and the other around me benefit from me yelling. Also, positive reinforcement is another principle that i can implement to help me. I can offer myself a tangible reward when i do not yell. When positively reinforcing the wanted behavior it can motivate me and most likely the positive behavior will continue. It can also boost my self- esteem and confidence.
One change that is not connected to the behavioral concept is meditating and/or taking deep breaths. I want to learn how to implement this concept before i get triggered into yelling. This is more of a spiritual concept. “

” If I were younger and I was asked this question, I am sure I would have a lot to say about myself. About what I could change. Now, I am so used to who I am, I only have minimal things I would try to fix. I wish I believed in myself more. It can be difficult trying to motivate yourself when you deal with imposter syndrome. It is something I struggle with immensely, and even though I always try my best, I feel like I have to do better in certain circumstances. My best is not enough, and so forth. Our behavior is an effect of our environment. However, I am not sure where I got this feeling from. Maybe it was because I was always held to the standard of getting As, and when I didn’t get As, I always kicked myself about it even though Bs were remotely good and Cs were still able to get you degrees. I hold myself to a high standard and I expect a lot of myself, which can be a cause for burnout if it gets to be too much. It could have been a source of operant conditioning, where the desirable effect (i.e. the approval of my family) would cause me to want to have good grades. When it comes down to it, one aspect that could not be connected to this behavioral concept would be centering it around my identity. Why do I feel like an imposter? Why do I feel like I am not good enough to do these things? In my opinion, this is not exactly behavioral.”
