SDMCSDSU Political Polarization Article Analysis
The purpose of this assignment is to explore an example of scholarly research on political polarization.
1) First, look at articles on the Mesa Library website using these steps:
Go to Mesa’s library website
Enter “political polarization united states” in the one search box and hit enter.
On the left, check the following boxes to narrow the results:
- “available online”
“scholarly/peer-reviewed”
- change the publication date to begin in 2019,
under Resource Type check “articles”
- Then hit “apply filters” (green box at the bottom)
You should have around 780 results. When you click on an article the first time, the system will prompt you for your CS-ID and your last name. Let me know if you have any trouble with this.
- 2) Then, CHOOSE an article that meets the following criteria:
- it has the following elements (do not choose an article in which you cannot locate these elements)
- An abstract
- A section explaining why the study is important and/or what other work has been done already
- A Hypothesis/hypotheses that is/are easily identifiable
- A Methodology / research design section
A Discussion / results section
You can understand what it is about and what it finds, even if you don’t understand it completely because the statistics are complicated. There is no need to carefully read every sentence for this assignment. The point is to explore an example of research NOT to fully comprehend it.
- 3) Then, write a PAPER that is a short summary of and reflection on the article. Your paper should include:
an introduction paragraph
at least 4 paragraphs about the research reported in the article- one paragraph about EACH of the following a) what the author says about how the article builds on past research and is important for its new contributions, b) the hypothesis (hypotheses) , c) the methodology (how they studied the topic), and d) what the author reports they found. Somewhere in these paragraphs, try to describe the “dependent” and “independent” variables.
- a paragraph that is your own reflection on the article
- a concluding paragraph that includes a reflection on political polarization more generally
- Your paper should also include at least 4 direct citations from the article (mla in-text citations are best)
- And a “sources cited” list with the article listed. Information about how to do this is at: https://www.sdmesa.edu/library/cite-sources/Links to an external site.
