INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH PAPER #1
Choose ONE of the following two options to complete. For either option chosen, your research paper must be 4-6 pages in length. APA style (latest edition) is required. Make note that your cover page and References do NOT count toward the page total. You do not need to submit an abstract. You must cite the main text in our course by Ting-Toomey and Chung. You must also creatively and clearly provide a minimum of two scholarly, academic research articles that connect with something discussed in your paper. You are welcome to cite more than this, including your course texts, but these do not count as the two separate articles. Submit your paper on or before the due date shown in Canvas as an MS Word doc/docx.
OPTION A: Intercultural Family Research Assignment
Ethnicity, Family and Communication – Research your own family background to gain a more complete sense of your ethnic identity. You must speak with your parents / guardians and any other family members to discover where each generation of your family was raised. (Include at least as far back as your grandparents, but going back to your great-grandparents would be even better.) Find out as much as possible what stereotypes and labels are used for your ethnic group in the United States. Strive to focus on and learn about how communication has been influenced by this area of life. With as much information you can gather from interviewing and speaking with family members, you will then address the following:
- What is your ethnic background?
- To what extent do you feel your ethnic background influences who you are today?
- If you think that your ethnic background has little influence on you today, then what other variables do you feel have significant influence on your behavior?
- In what way does your ethnic background influence with whom you are comfortable communicating? With what groups would you not feel comfortable communicating? What groups might feel uncomfortable communicating with you?
- To what extent do you think people are aware of your ethnic background? Do you think this influences the way they communicate with you?
OPTION B: Intentional Intercultural Engagement
You will choose an individual from another culture to become acquainted with in a more substantive and purposeful manner. No two students in this class may select the same individual. If you are an international student, you should choose someone who comes from a different place (i.e. a Bahamian student may not choose another Bahamian to interview). Choose someone who will meet with you at least four separate times during the next few weeks. The separation of time and space between meetings is required. You should record your impressions and observations from these meetings shortly after they occur. After you have completed the required interactions, summarize your experiences and be sure to address the following:
- How did you feel when you received this assignment? Have your feelings changed? If so, in what ways? If not, why not?
- Describe the interaction that was the most enjoyable. What made it enjoyable?
- What have you learned about intercultural communication competence from the experiences you have had with your partner? Be specific.
- What did you learn about your partner’s culture?
- Did you notice any challenges in trying to communicate with your partner? Did any misunderstandings occur? Did you overcome any difficulties you faced?
- What did you learn about yourself as an intercultural communicator?
- What did you learn from this experience that helped you understand what it takes to become a competent intercultural communicator?
