CCN The Intricate Tapestry of A Familys Culture and History Essay
Family Genogram and Assessment Assignment Purpose This assignment is designed to develop family assessment skills by integrating visual and verbal information. Requirements This paper will be a Word document in APA format, Times New Roman 12-point font. Include title page but no reference section. • Landscape format may be used for the genogram. The genogram can be handdrawn and scanned, or you can use Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. In either case it should be clear and fit onto one page. • Directions 1. Family Culture and History: Describe the role of cultural values (such as individualism, collectivism, Confucianism, Protestant work ethic) and events (such as migration, assimilation, loss, remarriage) in shaping your family members’ roles and challenges. 2. Genogram: Complete a genogram of your own family, including at least three generations and the nature of the relationships among all members, including subgroups and close, enmeshed, conflicted, and distant or cut off relationships. 3. Assessment: Create an assessment of the family’s presenting problem that incorporates what you learned in the other parts of the assignment. Answer the following questions, using the titles in bold for subheadings: 1. a. Problem: What is one behavioral problem you believe has been affected by the family system and by the larger social context? Describe the problem as a behavior chain, with antecedents, actions, and consequences. The problem may also be cyclical, in which the consequences become the antecedents. This problem could be your own, one that primarily affects another family member, or one that exists between or among family members. You may choose a problem that existed in the past and may be resolved or improved, but for the purposes of this assignment, go back to the time when it remained a challenge. b. Context: Describe the systemic interactions that have maintained the problem, and how they have done so. These interactions could include factors beyond the microsystem of the family, such as the interaction between family and school system, or the effect of macro issues like racial profiling. c. Resources: Describe the family strengths and resources that can be mobilized to resolve or improve this problem behavior. Include both internal strengths, such as values and coping skills, and external resources, such as community programs or positive relationships among microsystems such as family and school. d. First Step: Conclude your paper by sharing the first step you would recommend a family social worker take in helping the family with this problem, and why you would start there. Grading Criteria Your paper will be graded on the clarity with which you connect family relationships, levels of the social ecosystem, family history, the presenting problem, and strengths and resources. Proper use of the terminology, symbols and concepts of the genogram and ecogram will also be considered.
