Describe an example of supporting evidence from recent, relevant literature that justifies your study. Explain how this example aligns with your proposed study and address a “gap” in the literature. Mixed Essential/Non-Essential Workers
Mixed Essential/Non-Essential Workers
Before the pandemic (van Zoonen & ter Hoeven, 2022), society identified essential workers primarily as EMTs and healthcare professionals. However, by extension, what defined essential wavered to any occupation needed to maintain societal demands. Government officials included firefighters and police officers as first responders. Then, later, workers who previously were labeled as non-essential (mail carriers, food production, distribution, the internet, and communication services) were added (van Zoonen & ter Hoeven, 2022).
Gap
Despite the labor provided by domestic workers (sitters, caregivers, and home health providers), their services remained non-essential, although they performed essential duties. Domestic workers have long been the victims of poverty, inadequate housing, wages, and lack of benefits (Sternberg, 2021). Several non-profit organizations continue to advocate for improved working conditions for domestic workers.

My dissertation topic focuses on the lack of African-American women in leadership positions in rural South Mississippi. According to the article by Pham (2021), African-American women are the most underrepresented group in corporate America. In addition, African-American women make up 7.4% of the population in the United States but hold fewer leadership positions.
My research will focus on underrepresented African-American females in rural South Mississippi. My research will allow me to collect real-life information from African-American women who have gone through the challenges of getting where they are today. I pray this information collected will help show the importance of underrepresented African-American women in leadership positions in rural South Mississippi.
