As individuals who professions within the criminal justice system are built upon solid ethical values, it is paramount we reflect on what keeps us centered as we serve the public. It is also important we maintain a solid system of checks and balances. We need to make sure that we are developing ourselves to the ethics that will be required for the profession we choose. In this course you examined and discussed your chosen field’s code of ethics. I have supplied some general code of ethics for the various fields in criminal justice (Police, corrections, probation….) for you as well.  If your career choice is not here research and find one that most closely fits your career direction.

Write a personal ethics development plan that examines your personal ethical system, values and ground rules. Students can utilize the results of the various assessments they completed throughout the semester as well to aid in the development of this plan and reflection. They can also use the below guiding questions to craft their paper.

• Focus on the developmental aspect of your ethics on a particular position that you may seek employment or are currently employed, and after review of the career choice code of ethics, how can you develop yourself to mesh with the ethical guidelines that profession follows?   
  • Define your underlying ethical theory/s and system, its primary principles, the sources that helped shape your ethics—such as people, institutions, events, and so forth—and the criteria and decision-making factors you have used to revise them.
  • Discuss the potential effect of your ethics on your performance within the career field you choose (police, corrections, victim services, etc.) or use of them in the workplace. Use a specific personal example.
  • Explain why ethics are needed in the organization (CJ career choice organization you chose) and how ethics are integrated into an organization to achieve its direction and goals. What effect does the application of these ethics have on individuals, organizations, and society?
