Crimes are frequently seen as deserving punishment. Many researchers suggest that criminal punishments maintain social order. It is even assumed by some that threatening potential law violators and ensuring offenders suffer uncomfortable punishments reduces the likelihood of future or continued criminal behavior. Criminal sentencing was designed to achieve five general goals: Punishment, Deterrence, Incapacitation, Rehabilitation, and Restitution. Punishment emphasizes the infliction of pain or suffering. Deterrence limits the ability of an offender from committing crimes in the future with specific forms of punishment. Incapacitation removes the offender from society and reduces the offenders’ ability to commit more crimes. Rehabilitation is used to change the offenders’ behavior and attitude. Restitution ensures offenders recompense to society and victims for their behavior.
