Introduction

a brief, general introduction to the wide field of your research

recent arguments in the published scholarship you have read, in your own words

narrowing to a brief statement of what your research is about, with a few sentences to say why you have chosen the topic

your own single ‘thesis’, or exactly what you want to argue about your topic in this essay

[OPTIONAL] naming your ‘themes’, or the main ideas that this essay is going to cover to support your thesis

Main sections of the essay, organized logically into ‘themes’ for discussion, for instance into three themes (more or less depending what you want to say):

Discuss here the materials in the course reader that are relevant to the first ‘theme’ of your topic. You are starting to explore the first group of ideas you will discuss, and beginning to give evidence for your main argument. Use examples from your reading to support the view you are building: do you agree with what the published authors have said? How does your analysis contribute to any existing debates?

The second group of ideas you are exploring

[As for Theme 1, but adding more information, supported by relevant ideas from the readings]

The third group of ideas you are exploring

[As for Theme 2, but providing increasing evidence and relevant ideas from the readings which make your overall argument stronger [AND SO ON…]

Conclusion

a brief summary of your research and findings, which emphasizes what you see as the most important points

a clear statement of your own final argument about your topic

[OPTIONAL] stating what you have learned from completing the research project]

[OPTIONAL] What are the implications of your findings? Do they require some people or organizations to rethink their actions?
