RU Earth Experiencing the Most Dramatic Warming Questions
Climate and Biosphere: Extreme Weather Lab 5d only:https://serc.carleton.edu/eslabs/weather/5d.htm Links to an external site.
Under the ‘SSPs’ and ‘RCPs’ sections you can click the triangle to get more information. Take the time to read ‘down’ into this part as it describes scenarios that climate change models use to predict the future in detail, and this is useful for our class discussions etc.
On the main landing page of the IPCC interactive model, if you click on the rotating earth you can ‘roll’ it around to see areas that are not clearly visible when you first land on the page.
When you look at the details of the IPCC Advanced model for any region, you’ll have to hit the ‘expand view’ icon to see the graphs and tables. When you want to go back and pick another region, you’ll have to hit the ‘x’ to get out of that expanded view.
Note that you can zoom the whole earth image in and out under the Advanced model, which makes it easier to click on any particular region.
Climate and the Cryosphere: Future of the Cryosphere Lab 6aonly: https://serc.carleton.edu/eslabs/cryosphere/6a.html
This lab is essentially an add-on to the above using the same IPCC interactive model.
Use the above two websites to answer questions:
1. What regions of the Earth warm most dramatically in all of the climate scenarios shown in the IPCC Interactive Atlas (non-Advanced version)?
2. Describe your general observations about the differences in the IPPCC maps of the two places you chose to view in the IPCC Advanced model section. Write about similarities or differences and what changes, if any, happened when you adjusted your parameter. Be sure to note what parameters you used and which one was changed.
3. On the IPPC Advanced map, click the area containing your home state or region to bring up a graph and see the predicted future changes in temperature.
How old will you be in 2050, 2080?
How much will the temperature in your home region/state have changed by 2050 assuming SSP1-2.6?
How much will the temperature in your home region/state have changed by 2050 assuming SSP5- 8.5?
Which of these two SSP scenarios do you think is the most likely representation of the medium-term future (2041-2060), and why?
4. Give two examples of how the projected increase in average temperature by 2050, assuming SSP5 to 8.5 could impact your daily life.
