PHIL 525 USF Philosophy The Concept of Logos Questions
The text we are discussing will be the fragments on the Logos which you have read on Perusal. Each student will be responsible for making two significant comments, these can be
- Adding something to someone else’s point
- stating politely why you think the previous point made was incorrect
- picking up discussion if it is lagging
- bringing discussion back to the text
- introducing a new point of contention that others can discuss
The Questions we are pursuing in these texts are:
1. What is the Logos? Logos is a Greek word that means “word”, “reason”, “account”, and many more things – it is the suffix in Psychology, Biology and so forth. How crucial a concept is this?
2. What are the advantages of learning through discussion? Are there aspects of learning that can only happen through discussion? What makes a ‘good’ conversation? What do you think is possible for a good conversation to achieve? For example, could there be a conversation so good that it brings peace to a war torn region? Justice to a society rife with corruption? What does it mean for a society to have a conversation?
3. What does it mean to understand somebody else? What happens through symbolic language between people such that we find joy, despair, confusion, anger based off the signs someone else uses?
