GRANT APPLICATION RUBRIC

Assignment description and directions:

For this assignment, you will be completing a request for proposal from a real granting agency.

This can either be a government grant (federal grants are housed at grants.gov), a corporate

grant, or a foundation grant. The request for proposal can be as simple or complicated as the

student desires; however, it must be a full request for proposal for a full grant application. Grant

applications that are simple letters of inquiry will not be accepted and will be automatically

graded as a 0. Please include the request for proposal in your submission, along with a cover

letter regardless if requested by the granting agency. This must be for a real nonprofit

organization; however, the usage of the grant funds can either be real or hypothetical. If you need

help filling in details about the organization, the organization’s website along with its Form 990

will be great places for you to start. It is entirely possible that without working for the

organization, you will not be able to fill in details from the RFP. In this case, if after checking the

organization’s website and Form 990 you still cannot fill in the necessary information, try your

best and note the assumptions you are making. This assignment will be worth 250 points or 25%

of your grade and is due on April 4th at 11:59 PM.

• Request for Proposal (25 Points)

o Full RFP document is included in the submission to grade for

completeness.

o RFP requests a full grant proposal and not just a one-page request for

inquiry.

• Cover Letter (25 Points)

o Application includes a cover letter hitting on the following points

(unless otherwise specified by the request for proposal):

▪ Cover Letter is addressed to the appropriate individual at the

grantor agency (if no one is listed, address to the awards

committee at the agency issuing the grant)

▪ Cover letter contains a one-sentence description of the proposal

▪ Cover letter provides a summary of how the funds will be used

▪ Cover letter lists the total amount of funds requested

▪ Cover letter provides contact information for the charity

• Grant Application (150 Points)

o All areas addressed in the RFP are included in the grant application

which can include but are not limited to: Executive Summary,

Introduction, Statement of Need, Project Objectives, Project

Description, Budget, Program Evaluation, Conclusion, etc.

o Clear evidence of knowledge of the organization is demonstrated.

Student incorporates either prior knowledge of the organization or

materials from its website or Form 990 to best fill out organizational

background information and financial information.

• Organization and Grammar, and APA Requirements (50 Points):

o Grant application is filled out professionally and in a manner that is

visually appealing. Sections are logically put together following the

request of the RFP

o Grant application has a proper flow, section titles and breaks are

implemented logically, transitions between paragraphs are used, and

paragraphs are structured appropriately. Bullet points are employed

logically, sparingly, and for reader clarity rather than for taking up

space.

o Writing is appropriate for either an 8000-level graduate course or a

3000-level undergraduate course.

o Proper grammar is utilized.
