Correlation analysis is the statistical method used in nursing research to determine the relationship between two or more factors (Schober & Vetter, 2020). It looks at the extent to which these factors are intertwined with patient results, clinical care, and the health system. Nurse researchers can collect meaningful data and validate practice based on evidence by using correlation analysis techniques. Correlational analysis in nursing intends to identify the trend and the strength of the relationship between the targeted variables (Janse et al., 2021). A researcher may study, for instance, the relationship that exists between patients' medication plan adherence and overall treatment outcomes. Through the evaluation of the connection between the variables, researchers can tell whether there is a positive, negative, or no relationship between them and also how strong the association is.
Correlational analysis is usually employed when variables cannot be manipulated experimentally for ethical or practical reasons (Janse et al., 2021). In nursing, ethical issues related to the random allocation of patients to different treatment groups may limit the use of correlational studies, an alternative that can be useful. Through examination and interpretation of naturally occurring variations of the variable, nurse researchers can discover the possible relations between causal and effect variables that require further study. Moreover, the correlation analysis may illuminate the complicated combination of components that result in health outcomes. Nursing involves multiple domains such as patient population and clinical parameters, organizational characteristics, and healthcare policies. Through the scrutiny of these links, the researchers find out the risk patterns, protective measures, and intervention points.
One of the areas where correlational analysis is also used in nursing is the development and validation of assessment tools and measurement instruments (Janse et al., 2021). The validity and reliability of a questionnaire are determined by the correlation of different items or subscales within the tool. This process ensures that the instrument explicitly measures the construct and that its data provide meaningful and reliable information for planning or research in nursing. Although correlational analysis does not show causality, to some extent it can be useful in creating hypotheses or in planning experimental and longitudinal studies. The discovery of strong relationships among variables can allow the researchers to frame their research question, plan their research strategies more cleverly, determine cause and effect, and identify possible remedies. In summary, correlational analysis is integral to nursing research as it reveals relations between variables, leads to evidence-based practices, directs the development of hypotheses, and evaluates diagnostic tools (Schober & Vetter, 2020). The utilization of correlational analysis by nurse researchers not only gives the opportunity to develop knowledge, improve patient outcomes, and provide quality healthcare.

Correlation analysis is a statistical tool used to measure the yes or no outcomes. The main aim of using correlation analysis is to compare two variables to determine how they relate. Nurses use this tool to determine the relationship between different patient outcomes. For instance, the nurses can determine the relationship between maternal age and post-partum depression in post-partum hospitalization. By so doing, the nurses can determine the course of action and direction. The nurses can also calculate the strength of the relationship between the two variables.
The evidence gained is used for practice, and the nurses can determine the risks and relevance of the tests (Yang et al., 2018). The evidence can also warrant the effort and attention directed toward the outcomes. Using the above example, the evidence gained on the relationship between the two variables can be used to predict and treat similar future health outcomes. The same data is used to predict and prevent the risks associated with the outcomes. This information or data can modify the treatments and interventions for the risks.
Through correlational analysis, nurses can formulate ways to improve healthcare quality. Identifying how variables relate also highlights the areas the healthcare system should work on to improve healthcare delivery services (Lim et al., 2022). Nurses can use evidence-based practice to improve patient care status in healthcare.
Correlation analysis and statistics are also used to explore new research grounds in nursing. More complex research areas can be explored by identifying the relationship between two variables (Yang et al., .2018). Researchers can use correlation analysis to compare the relationship between certain phenomena and variables, especially in quantitative research.
Nurses can use the knowledge obtained from finding the relationship between two variables, in order to find the relationship between factors that impact the health of the patients. For instance, if at all post partum hospitalization can cause anxiety, the nurses can use correlation analysis to determine the relationship between other factors such as depression and insomnia. A positive outcome, can be interpreted in that, the more the new mother recovers from post-partum, the more they recover from other factors.
The correlation analysis has different purposes, such as determining the relationship between two outcomes, identifying the risks and relevance, and warranting the effort that should be put in place. It is a statistical tool that can lay a research foundation to deliver evidence-based patient care and predict healthcare outcomes. Therefore, correlation analysis is important in nursing, statistics, and research.
