Sociology Explaining the State of Society Today to Future Me Letter

Write a letter to the future you 5 years from now explaining the state of society today. 

Think about everything you’ve learned in this course. Choose 3 of your favorite sociological topics to write about (based on chapters we read in class), and explain to future you what this topic is all about, why it’s important in society, what the challenges are (and how each theoretical perspective views it), and what solutions you hope to see in the future when you read this letter.

The structure of your letter should be as follows: 

Paragraph 1:

Greet future-you! Explain what this letter is going to be all about and briefly describe what’s going on in your life right now. Describe the current state of society – (politics, economy, society, media, social media/technology, fashion, etc.) End this paragraph by introducing the 3 topics that you will be discussing.

Use terminology you learned in the chapter to explain the background. Cite your sources where appropriate.

Part 2: What are some challenges surrounding this topic in society today? Approach this through the sociological lens of functionalists, conflict theorists, and symbolic interactionists and how they view this problem. What are some proposed solutions? You must cite your sources – textbook and external using whatever format you prefer. “I prefer in-text citations” (Vartanian, 2022). <- like this! 

Part 3: In 5 years when you read this letter – what do you think will be different about this topic? What do you hope to see? Do you think we’re headed in that direction already or is this idea far-fetched?

Paragraph 5:

Conclude this letter by stating what you think society will be like 5 years from now. What do you hope improves/changes? What was your favorite thing you learned from this class at GCC? Where do you hope to be when you receive this letter 5 years from now? 

Final part:

Include a photo, art, media, video, tweet, etc. that accurately encompasses the state of society today. This can be a photo embedded into your letter or a link (I suggest a direct photo/video where possible, since this link may not exist 5 years from now). Include 1-2 short sentences describing why you chose this media.
